Winless NCCU women drop 20th straight, fall at Delaware State
N.C. Central women’s basketball rookie Tisha Dixon earned her second double-double, but it wasn’t enough as NCCU remained winless with a 58-49 loss at Delaware State on Saturday.
Dixon tied her season-high of 13 points and grabbed 11 rebounds. NCCU senior Chasidy Williams had 12 points and three steals and freshman Aja Hoyle contributed nine Eagle baskets and five boards.
NCCU (0-20, 0-7 MEAC) struck first taking a quick 6-2 lead on a layup from Dixon. The next ten minutes marked a back-and-forth battle that included two ties and three lead changes. Hoyle hit a free throw with 8:33 left in the half tying the game at 16, but NCCU trailed 31-22 at the half.
NCCU went on a 6-1 run to open the second half, cutting the deficit to four on a Williams’ jumper with 15:38 to play. It was as close as NCCU would get.
NCCU shot 32 percent from the field, pulled down 27 rebounds, captured seven steals, dished out five assists and shot 15-for-24 from the charity stripe.
Delaware State (8-12, 5-1 MEAC) was led by Tierra Hawkins who also posted a double-double on the day. Hawkins led all-scorers with 25 points and added 10 rebounds and four steals.
Tasia Bristow contributed 11 points and Keyanna Tate had nine rebounds for DSU.
DSU shot 41 percent from the field and 75 percent from the line while grabbing 39 rebounds and passing for 13 assists.
NCCU returns to action Monday at Princess Anne, Md., against Maryland-Eastern Shore at 5:30 p.m.
