NCCU rips S.C. State for 11th straight win, extends MEAC lead

Jeremy Ingram scored 22 points as N.C. Central topped South Carolina State 67-53 on the road Saturday.

It was the Eagles’ 11th straight victory.

NCCU (19-5, 10-1 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) stayed atop the MEAC by shooting 40 percent and forcing S.C. State into 21 turnovers. Jordan Parks added 16 points and eight rebounds.

Theron Stephens led S.C. State (8-16, 4-7) with 10 points. Daryll Palmer added 9 points and had 10 rebounds.

S.C. State led by five twice in the first half, but a 14-2 run by NC Central — including a trey by Ingram — allowed the Eagles to hold a 30-22 lead at intermission.

NCCU’s advantage grew to as many as 22 in the second half as the Eagles cruised. NCCU dominated in the paint, outscoring S.C. State there 22-10 and points off turnovers (15-4).

The Eagles also saw their MEAC lead grow as Norfolk State which entered the day just one game back of Central in the loss column, fell to then-No. 3 Hampton 79-73 in overtime Saturday evening.

The conference leaderboard now has NCCU at 10-1 followed by No. 2 Hampton at 9-3 and No. 3 Norfolk State at 8-3.

NOTES — With the win, NCCU head coach LeVelle Moton has won 80 games (fifth coach in school history to achieve that feat) ... Emanuel Chapman is now fourth in school history with 159 career steals ... Jeremy Ingram is now 17th in school history with 1,267 career points. ... NCCU has won 11 straight games for the second consecutive season.
