Patrick Leonard was 5 for 5 with a home run and a double as the Durham Bulls took a 13-3 win over Syracuse on Thursday night, wrapping up a three-game sweep of the Chiefs at Durham Bulls Athletic Park.
Bulls manager Jared Sandberg twice went to his bullpen in the ninth inning. He was trying desperately to avoid a Gwinnett Braves go-ahead run in a 5-5 game that would spoil a Bulls’ comeback bid, and knock them out of sole possession of first place in the International League South.
Atlanta Braves manager Brian Snitker was a young manager for the Bulls during the 1983, ’84 and ’87 seasons. His Durham teams never experienced a winning season, yet did manage to scrape their way to the Carolina League’s championship series in ’84 before losing to Lynchburg.
Thanks to several arms, and bats that came alive at the right moments, the Durham Bulls competed the four-game sweep of their South Division rivals, defeating the Charlotte Knights, 6-0, Thursday night at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park.
