Alex Ovechkin had two goals and an assist, and the Washington Capitals beat the Carolina Hurricanes 5-3 Tuesday night despite allowing three goals to Jiri Tlusty. Washington trailed 2-0 early before scoring five goals on its first 11 shots, won its seventh in 11 games and won for the first time since 2007 when allowing a hat trick to an opposing player, according to STATS LLC.

Canadiens overcome early Jordan Staal goal, rout Hurricanes

Max Pacioretty scored twice and Andrei Markov and Jeff Halpern also scored for Montreal, which swept the season series against Carolina and remains undefeated in 10 games against the Southeast Division this season. Goaltender Justin Peters helped the Hurricanes put some pressure on Winnipeg in the Southeast Division. Peters stopped 34 shots Saturday as Carolina edged closer to the Jets with a much-needed 3-1 win. Alex Semin and Eric Staal each had a goal and an assist for the Hurricanes (16-15-2), who snapped a seven-game winless streak.
