Wise words on college athletics from a former colleague

A couple weeks ago, I finally finished after many fits and starts a wonderful book by my old friend and former colleague Ed Williams.

Williams, now retired, was for many years editor of the editorial pages at The Charlotte Observer, and for several of those years I was a mid-level editor on the news side of the paper. His book, “Liberating Dixie,” is a collection of columns and editorials he crafted with characteristic grace, wisdom and incisiveness over the years. Reading it was in some ways discouraging, since I was reminded on page after page how I could never measure up to the caliber of Williams’ work.

WINNER TAKE ALL: Unbeatens Southern, Orange meet for Big Eight title

Perfectly scripted.

“The last game (between) two undefeated (teams), and the outcome (could mean) you are the champions,” Southern coach Darius Robinson said.

“We’re here. We’re both 10-0,” Orange coach Pat Moser said. “This is for the championship. It’s very big.”

Something has to give when these 3-A teams from the Big Eight Conference meet at Orange High School Friday, Nov. 7 at 7 p.m.. Orange could put a chink in the Spartans’ armor. Or Southern could bag the Panthers.

“The Big Eight Conference is the best 3-A conference in the state,” Moser said. “We had to play really good football to get by those teams.

“We’re both undefeated, 10-0 teams. It’s been a hard road to get here to that.”

Orange and Southern spent part of the season fending off conference counterparts Chapel Hill, Northwood and Cardinal Gibbons. Those matchups were akin to what could be described as Big Eight bowl games.

Which would make the Southern-Orange scenario something like the Super Big Eight Bowl.

BIG EIGHT SHOWDOWN

UNBEATENS NORTHWOOD, ORANGE TO CLASH IN HILLSBOROUGH

There was little to no doubt that the area’s top high school football conference this season would be the Big Eight 3-A.

With returning state 3-AA champion Southern, state 3-AA semifinalist Orange and 2013 playoff teams Cardinal Gibbons, Northwood and Chapel Hill all in the fold, things couldn’t have looked brighter for the second-year conference.

Turns out, through four games, the Big Eight might have been undervalued. And tonight, the Big Eight jumps into conference play.

The top four teams in the league — Southern, Orange, Northwood and Chapel Hill — are undefeated (4-0) and ranked no lower statewide than 34th in the 3-A ranks by MaxPreps.com, the online partner of the N.C. High School Athletic Association.

One of those four is assured of suffering its first loss tonight as Orange, which has outscored its four opponents by a combined 144-40, hosts Northwood at 7.

Three of Orange's wins have come at the expense of 4-A programs from the embattled PAC-6.

Northwood has outscored its four victims 172-29 and is ranked 26th (3-A), Orange 13th.
