Prep playoffs: Big 8 showdown at Southern

In Friday's (Nov. 28) state quarterfinal high school football playoffs, Southern hosts Chapel Hill (3-AA), Orange hosts N. Guilford (3-AA) and  Hillside travels to New Bern (4-A). All games begin at 7:30 p.m.

NCHSAA 4-A Playoffs: Hillside clicking after slow start

No. 1 New Bern (13-0) is next for No. 5 Hillside (9-4). These foes are familiar with each other. New Bern beat Hillside 12-0 in the season opener for both teams. That game was at Hillside. They’ll meet in the state quarterfinals at 7:30 p.m. Friday at New Bern for a shot at the Final Four, one game away from competing for the state championship.

SHOOTOUT: No. 1 Southern blows past Cleveland 67-48

Reigning state 3-AA champion Southern unleashed a potent run-and-gun offense to turn back a powerful Cleveland scoring machine Friday night 67-48. Kendall Hinton compiled 174 yards running and 285 passing for 459 total yards. He ran for one touchdown and threw for four more.

Hillside too hot for previously unbeaten 71st to handle

Nas Forte-Ferguson and his Hillside teammates had a tough time getting to Seventy-First’s Loyd E. Auman Athletic Field Friday night, arriving 40 minutes before kickoff. But once they got on the field, Forte-Ferguson and company had no trouble finding the end zone and keeping Seventy-First out of it, winning 27-0.

BIG FOUR: Southern, Hillside, Chapel Hill, Orange sweep 2nd round

The area's four remaining high school playoff entries pulled a perfecto Friday night, to move into the state quarterfinals where three members of the Big East 3-A Conference are among the last eight 3-AA programs standing. Southern will host Chapel Hill on Friday in one quarterfinal, Orange will host Northern Guilford in another, and Hillside will travel to No. 1 seed New Bern in 4-A in a rematch of the Hornets' season-opener.

Prep 3-AA Playoffs: Orange hopes to have star RB Jones back

Orange’s 12-1 record is strong. But the Panthers would tell you they should be undefeated heading into the quarterfinals of the N.C. High School Athletic Association 3-AA playoffs. No. 6 seed Orange hosts No. 7 Northern Guilford (12-1) at 7:30 p.m. Friday.

Chapel Hill builds big early lead, upsets Terry Sanford

With his team staring down a double-digit deficit after a nightmare first quarter against Chapel Hill on Friday night, Terry Sanford coach Bryan Till said he saw no shortage of fight on the Bulldogs’ sideline. As the rest of Friday night’s second round Class 3-AA state playoff contest unfolded, that showed as Terry Sanford put together a solid comeback before falling short 23-20.

Orange blasts its way into state 3-AA quarterfinals

Two touchdowns in 50 seconds at the end of the first half propelled the Panthers of Orange High School (12-1) past the Corinth Holders High Pirates (9-4) and into the state 3-AA quarterfinals 42-13 Friday night.

Prep playoffs: Four left ... and counting

Four area teams remain alive for Friday’s (Nov. 21) 7:30 p.m. second round of the N.C. High School Athletic Association playoffs, but only one can be considered a favorite. Reigning state 3-AA champion Southern is that favorite, as the No. 1 seed hosts No. 8 Clayton Cleveland. Southern is one of three Big Eight 3-A Conference teams still alive after the first round of the playoffs, joining No. 6 seed Orange and No. 12 Chapel Hill, both of whom play on the road in 3-AA action tonight. In Fayetteville, 4-A No. 5 seed Hillside (8-4) will have its hands more than full when it travels to meet No. 4 Seventy-First (12-0).

Southern sets up battle of unbeatens 68-0 over Webb

Oxford Webb was haunted by reigning 3-AA state champions Southern in a Halloween horror story that ended with the visiting Warriors buried 68-0 in a bone-rattling Spartan graveyard where offenses have gone to die all season.

South Granville has some unfinished business in Raleigh as the Vikings take on Hendersonville Saturday, Nov. 1, at 5 p.m. in the 2-A state volleyball championship game at Reynolds Coliseum.

Going Berserk! Vikings best Jags for state 2-A title berth

Weathering Carrboro’s quick start was the key for South Granville to come back and beat the Jaguars 3-1 (19-25, 25-23, 25-18, 25-16) Tuesday night in the state 2-A volleyball semifinals.

No. 4 East seed South Granville (28-3) earned its second berth in three years in the 2-A state championship which will be played at 5 p.m. Saturday at N.C. State’s Reynolds Coliseum, against the 2-A Western champion, No. 11 seed Hendersonville, which beat No. 8 West seed Bunker Hill 3-0 Tuesday night.

South Granville coach Christy Fitzgerald said her team played with a lot of poise against East No. 2 seed Carrboro after losing the opening set.

“We knew Carrboro was going to be a tough team,” Fitzgerald said. “We knew they were balanced a lot like us and they had a lot of weapons like us. After the first set we settled in and remembered who we were and it started to click and it started to flow.”

Southern corrals Chargers 33-25 for 21st straight win

Southern came up with seven turnovers — four interceptions and three fumble recoveries — en route to a 33-25 win over Northwood Friday that left the Spartans (8-0, 4-0 Big Eight 3-A Conference) tied atop the Big Eight with Orange (8-0, 4-0 Big Eight).

Previously winless Northern moves into 1st place PAC-6 tie

Northern used a little old-school, smash-mouth football to grind out a 28-7 victory against Roxboro Person Monday night. The game was the PAC-6 opener for both teams and was originally scheduled for Friday before thunderstorms forced postponement.
