Jordan survives Hillside upset bid, earns twinbill split

The Hornets’ nest was abuzz Friday as PAC-6 4-A leader Jordan (18-1, 6-0) narrowly defeated host Hillside 63-60 in conference play. ... In the girls’ game, Hillside (16-2) handily defeated conference rival Jordan (13-6, 3-3), 86-55, to improve to 6-0 in the PAC-6.

Voyager Academy rides 13-game streak, overwhelms foes

While most of the attention is focused on Voyager’s Chris Sause and Jay Huff, the rest of the Vikings’ roster has developed nicely thanks to a liberal rotation used by Coach Mike Huff. And it helps that the substitutions don’t result in a falloff in talent or scoring for the Vikings. It was evident in Voyager’s 79-40 win over Raleigh Charter on Friday night.

Chapel Hill is making a bold statement in the Big Eight 3-A Conference. Far from folding after a shocking loss to underdog Orange a week ago, the Tigers are back on the prowl. Southern felt the sting with its first conference loss late Friday, falling 66-48 on its home court.

Orange, S. Granville wrestlers clinch tourney titles in Mebane

When the dust settled at the rugged 22-team Eagle Invitational wrestling tournament on Saturday, South Granville grappler Nathean Castillo was crowned the 113-pound champion. South Granville, with a 20-1 record one of the big surprises in North Carolina wrestling this season, finished sixth in the team standings. Orange finished third, with Joe Scott clinching the 138-pound title and Byron Stephenson rolling to the 285-pound championship.

Sandlappers best Tar Heels in annual Shrine Bowl

North Carolina was left kicking it self on Saturday after multiple miscues on special teams allowed South Carolina to win 21-12 and extend the Sandlapper winning streak in the annual Shrine Bowl of the Carolinas over the Tar Heels to three.

Northwood rips Gibbons for No. 3 Big Eight seed

Northwood romped over Cardinal Gibbons 31-6 on a night that their offense wasn’t even firing on all cylinders, but Coach Bill Hall assured he would take care of those miscues this week in practice headed into Friday’s 3-A state playoffs.

Northwood rips Chapel Hill in Big Eight tussle

“We tried to come back from their opening and we just played flat,” Marsh said. “This was not one of our better games. It was a series of things that led to everything going in their favor. Northwood was just the better team tonight and it showed.”

Northwood got the opening kickoff and marched to the Chapel Hill 10 before stalling and settling for a 27-yard field goal by Tyler Whitaker.

But after that defensive stand by the Tigers, everything else went awry.

UNBEATEN NO. 1: Southern ends Orange perfection

Reigning state champion Southern won the battle of the unbeatens Friday night, handing Orange its first loss of the season 27-23 en route to the Big Eight 3-A Conference championship and likely the No. 1 seed in the state 3-AA playoffs.

Strothers, Riverside clinch 4-A playoff berth with road win

Riverside survived a five-turnover performance and pulled away for a 44-24 victory at Person Friday. Quarterback Diante Strothers accounted for four touchdowns for Riverside in the win.
