Riverside made it an all-Durham championship in the High School OT Holiday Invitational with a 55-53 win over Raleigh Millbrook in the semifinals on Saturday at Cary Academy.

Hillside stops Broughton, chases girls’ High School OT title

Last year Hillside lost all three games it played in the High School OT Holiday Invitational but thanks to Saturday’s 68-65 win over Raleigh Broughton, the Hornets are a win away from taking the title.

Orange, S. Granville wrestlers clinch tourney titles in Mebane

When the dust settled at the rugged 22-team Eagle Invitational wrestling tournament on Saturday, South Granville grappler Nathean Castillo was crowned the 113-pound champion. South Granville, with a 20-1 record one of the big surprises in North Carolina wrestling this season, finished sixth in the team standings. Orange finished third, with Joe Scott clinching the 138-pound title and Byron Stephenson rolling to the 285-pound championship.

Sandlappers best Tar Heels in annual Shrine Bowl

North Carolina was left kicking it self on Saturday after multiple miscues on special teams allowed South Carolina to win 21-12 and extend the Sandlapper winning streak in the annual Shrine Bowl of the Carolinas over the Tar Heels to three.

The area will be well represented in Saturday’s Shrine Bowl as three local players will participate in the game in Spartanburg, S.C., that pits all-star teams from North Carolina and South Carolina against each other.

Fall Wells Fargo Conference Cup standings announced

Wells Fargo, along with the North Carolina  School Athletic Association, on Wednesday announced the final standings in the Wells Fargo Conference Cup competitions for the 2014 fall sports season. Area leaders include Granville Central, Carrboro, N.C. School of Science & Mathematics, and East Chapel Hill.

Chapel Hill girls, boys sweep Northwood twinbill

Northwood dashed Chapel Hill’s game plan, so the Tigers crashed the boards, washed away an eight-point deficit and put six players in double digits in a 72-61 win late Tuesday. Chapel Hill's girls also defeated Northwood.

South Granville had more than enough chances to win, but wasn’t able to cash in until it was simply too late in a 15-6 elimination loss to Northern Carolina 2-A Conference rival Bunn in the opening round of the 2-AA playoffs Friday.

Granville Central grabs 1-A playoff berth

 When head coach John Hammet arrived at Granville Central four years ago, the Panthers were barely able to field a team as they stumbled to losing records. But two years later, the team is on its way to its second consecutive playoff appearance after stompingTar-Roanoke 1-A Conference rival Northwest Halifax 42-0 Friday night.

Northwood rips Gibbons for No. 3 Big Eight seed

Northwood romped over Cardinal Gibbons 31-6 on a night that their offense wasn’t even firing on all cylinders, but Coach Bill Hall assured he would take care of those miscues this week in practice headed into Friday’s 3-A state playoffs.

Northwood rips Chapel Hill in Big Eight tussle

“We tried to come back from their opening and we just played flat,” Marsh said. “This was not one of our better games. It was a series of things that led to everything going in their favor. Northwood was just the better team tonight and it showed.”

Northwood got the opening kickoff and marched to the Chapel Hill 10 before stalling and settling for a 27-yard field goal by Tyler Whitaker.

But after that defensive stand by the Tigers, everything else went awry.

Riverside survived a five-turnover performance and pulled away for a 44-24 victory at Person Friday. Quarterback Diante Strothers accounted for four touchdowns for Riverside in the win.
