Early start at powerhouse Scotland couldn't top Southern

Southern coach Darius Robinson found out at 4:30 last Wednesday that Southern's Friday-night game had been moved up 48 hours and would be played Thursday night. No problem: The Spartans went to Laurinburg and beat the Fighting Scots 34-28.

To win some you have to lose some. That’s the case as least if you believe Riverside High School first year football coach Christopher Howell, who talked about that after his Pirates defeated Cedar Ridge High School 33-13 Friday in Hillsborough to claim their first victory of the season.

Hillside drops 3rd tight home game to state power

Another tough opponent handed Hillside a disappointing loss on Friday night. Defending state 4-A champion Greensboro Dudley prevailed 12-9 thanks to a late fourth-quarter touchdown by sophomore quarterback Hendon Hooker.

Demetrius Lyles melted through, past and around the defensive coverage for a pair of touchdown receptions, Julius Walton ran like a man possessed for another pair, and Cedar Ridge scored on six of seven possessions to thump East Chapel Hill 42-16.

Granville Central moves football game to tonight (weather)

Granville Central football coach and athletic director John Hammett announced today that the Panthers have rescheduled Friday night's scheduled game at Fayetteville Village Christian to tonight (Thursday, Sept. 11). Game time is 7 p.m. in Fayetteville.

In a span of a minute and three seconds the South Granville Vikings sealed a win with a pair of rushing touchdowns on consecutive possessions Friday and went on to defeat visiting Granville County rival Oxford Webb 28-12.

A PERFECT STORM

Perfection is on the line tonight as 4-0 Orange travels to Pittsboro to meet 4-0 Northwood in the Big Eight 3-A Conference showdown of the season. Orange is ranked No. 8 in the state among 3-A programs and Northwood No. 25 by MaxPreps.com, the online partner of the N.C. High School Athletic Association. ...The game is one of 13 games involving area teams on tap tonight. Only three others — Greensboro Dudley at Northern, Chapel Hill at Oxford Webb and Bartlett-Yancey at Roxboro Person — will be played in the area, the rest are on the road.

“Intense” is the word Northern High coach R.J. Wilson uses to describe the Knights’ football rivalry with crosstown rival Southern which will be renewed at 7 Friday night at Durham County Memorial Stadium. Southern alum and coach, Adrian Jones, says the Northern rivalry is more special to him than his players — “Hillside came in and took over the rivalry for the players,” Jones said. “But the game means a lot to me and I talk to my players about it a lot.” The rivalry has involved emotional investment with little return for the Knights of late. Northern has lost 10 straight in the series, winning its last game in 2002, according to Jones. ... Game-by-game breakdowns of all of Friday night's area football games.

Riverside tops Person for PAC-6 lead

Riverside grabbed command of the PAC-6 volleyball race with a 25-10, 25-16, 25-12 rout of Roxboro Person on Tuesday night. The Pirates improved to 14-1, 4-0 in the PAC-6 while handing the Rockets (7-3, 2-2) their second league loss the season. East Chapel Hill, an earlier Riverside victim, is alone in second at 8-8, 3-1.
