Prep Roundup: Orange takes wrestling lead; spring sports in full swing

WRESTLING
Orange leads 3-A individual meet

GREENSBORO — Orange High School leads the state 3-A individual wrestling tournament finals after one round with 18.5 points to 18 for Cameron Union Pines.  
Orange is the defending tournament champion and qualified 10 wrestlers into the state tournament, with six winning Thursday night.
Individual results from area qualifiers in Thursday’s 2-A, 3-A and 4-A opening rounds can be found below.
The 2-A, 3-A and 4-A classifications will begin competition Friday morning with the first round of consolations starting at 9 am. The 1-A class, with a smaller field of wrestlers, will start Friday afternoon at 2 p.m. with quarterfinals.
Championship matches in all classifications are scheduled for Saturday at 5 p.m.

BASEBALL
East Chapel Hill 12, Carrboro 1

CARRBORO — Starter John Page gave up one run in four innings and rode an 18-hit East Chapel Hill attack to a mercy-rule shortened five-inning win at Carrboro Thursday.
Page, 1-0, saw four teammates strike for three hits each — Jamari Bark, Grant Neal, Connor Sough and catcher Josh Baldwin. Neal had a pair of doubles and four RBI and Moore and Baldwin two RBI apiece for East, 2-0.

E. Alamance 6, Cedar Ridge 2
MEBANE — Eastern Alamance pitching shut down Cedar Ridge on only two hits Thursday in the season opener for both teams.

SOFTBALL
Northern 14, NCSSM 11

DURHAM — Northern High School took advantage of seven N.C. Science & Math errors to beat the Unicorns 14-11 in the season opener for both teams.

BOYS’ TENNIS
East Chapel Hill 9, Riverside 0
CHAPEL HILL — Perennial conference power East Chapel Hill won its second straight PAC-6 4-A match as Coach Lindsey Linker returned from a one-semester hiatus.
East improved to 2-0 overall and in league play, while Riverside dropped its season opener.

Cedar Ridge 6, Northwood 3
HILLSBOROUGH — Cedar Ridge won four of six singles matches and two of three doubles matches as it opened the season with a win over Carolina 12 1-A/2-A Conference foe Northwood.
The match was Northwood’s opener as well.

GIRLS’ SOCCER
Carrboro 7, Jordan-Matthews 0

SILER CITY — Carolina Houser scored twice and Emma Houser, Breighton Magee, Chrissy Bolesky, Leah Simon and Kenza Araba once each as Carrboro erupted for six goals in the first half in an interconference, season-opening win at Jordan-Matthews.
Carrboro is 1-0, Jordan-Matthews 0-1.

Jordan 4, Enloe 0
RALEIGH — Jordan rode a pair of first-half goals by Kimberly O’Brien and solo scores by Millicent Blivin and Rachel Hill to a shutout win at Raleigh Enloe.
Goalkeeper Rachel Baran had five saves in picking up the shutout in the season-opener for both teams.

GOLF
Broughton 156, Riverside 160

DURHAM — Riverside played perennial state power Raleigh Broughton to a virtual standoff at Croasdaile Country Club Thursday but came up four strokes short in a 156-160 loss.
Pirates Newt Barringer and Junior Schrickx finished second and third, respectively, at 38 and 39 in the 9-hole, par-36 event.
