Tigers win coin toss for Carolina 6 top seed

Feb. 16, 2013 @ 07:08 PM

With the flip of a coin Saturday, Chapel Hill ended a season-long battle with Oxford Webb and 6-9 McDonald’s All-America forward Isaiah Hicks.
The Tigers and Webb tied for the Carolina 6 Conference regular-season championship, but Chapel Hill won the coin flip and will be the No. 1 seed in this week’s league tournament.
More importantly, because the C-6 Tournament championship games are played this year at the site of the highest remaining boys’ seed, Chapel Hill will host the event, barring a Tigers’ loss at home in the semifinals Wednesday night.
Chapel Hill is the top seed in both the boys’ and girls’ tournaments, a single loss by the boys’ team being the only conference blemish on either team’s record.
The Tiger girls (23-1, 10-0) will be a prohibitive favorite in the tournament, having swept through the league undefeated. The boys (20-4, 9-1) have a tougher row to hoe with No. 2 seed Webb (20-4, 9-1) likely waiting in the championship game Friday night.
Both Chapel Hill teams received byes through Monday’s quarterfinal round and will host semifinal games at 6 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, and the championship games will be played Friday (6 p.m. girls, 8 p.m. boys).
Two other conferences also set their tournament schedules Saturday.
The PAC-6 boys’ tournament will run Tuesday, Thursday and Friday with the semifinals Thursday and Friday at Northern High School. Unbeaten Jordan (19-4, 12-0) has a bye until Thursday’s 6 p.m. semifinal game.
No. 2 Hillside or No. 3 Person look like the major potential stumbling blocks in Jordan’s road to a title, with No. 4 Northern posing a threat if it gets into the semis, since it will be the host school.
On the girls’ side, the tournament runs Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday, with the final two rounds also at Northern. No. 1 Southern has a bye into Wednesday’s 6 p.m. semifinal.
No. 2 Hillside will open a quarterfinals doubleheader at home Tuesday, the girls hosting last-place Person at 6 and the boys playing East Chapel Hill at 7:30 p.m.
The Carolina 12 hosts separate 1-A and 2-A tournaments for boys and girls. The C-12 quarterfinals Monday will be feature the bottom four finishers in each division — the Nos. 1 and 2 seeds have earned byes and will host semifinal games Wednesday. With one exception, the higher seed hosts the lower seed on Monday.
The exception is the Cedar Ridge and South Granville girls. Since South Granville’s boys were to host Cedar Ridge, the schools’ athletic directors decided to move the South Granville-Cedar Ridge girls’ game to South Granville. The idea of a one-site doubleheader appealed to both schools, South Granville athletic director Don Colgan said.
“Why split our fans at two different sites?” Colgan said. “This makes more sense.”
