BASEBALL

Voyager 6, Southern 1

DURHAM — In an odd twist Wednesday night, 1-A baseball powerhouse Voyager Academy “hosted” 4-A Southern on Southern’s home field — which doubles this year as Voyager’s home facility as well.

And the off-campus charter school hosts owned the night as righthanded starter Loy “Bubba” Stone pitched a complete game one-hitter and Chad Sykes drove in a pair of runs against mistake prone (five fielding errors) Southern.

Southern’s lone hit of the night was a triple by catcher Joshua Bumgardner in the second inning, but it didn’t result in a run.

The Spartans’ only score came in the third when Stone issued three of his five walks on the night and committed a fielding error. The run shutout-busting run came on a bases-loaded, one-out walk.

Stone struck out nine in the seven-inning game for 12-4 Voyager. Southern fell to 6-11.

Holly Springs 12, Orange 4

HILLSBOROUGH — Orange lost for only the second time this season and the first against a non-conference opponent.

Jonah Neville (1-1) took the loss. Jon Evans had a pair of hits and Bryse Wilson homered for the Panthers (15-2).

GIRLS’ SOCCER

Northern 2, Riverside 1

DURHAM — Nicole Crutchfield scored a pair of goals — the second snapping a 1-1 halftime tie — as Northern improved to 8-4, 6-3 PAC-6 4-A. Riverside (4-4-1, 2-3) fell despite a first-half goal by Alexa Dellinger.

Hillside 3, Roxboro Person 0

DURHAM — Jareea Bullock, Lanita Hughes and Sydney Brown scored and Kirsten Smith was perfect in goal with eight saves as Hillside (3-4, 3-4 PAC-6) shut out Roxboro Person (3-9, 2-7 PAC-6) Wednesday.

GOLF

Durham Academy 301, Ravenscroft 303

DURHAM — Braxton Lloyd and Dylan Lukes shot 2-over-par 74s Wednesday to lead Durham Academy past Triangle Independent Schools Athletic Conference rival Ravenscroft in an 18-hole match at the par 72 Hope Valley Country Club.

DA overcame a 2-under 70 by Ravenscroft’s Ryan Gerard with a balanced four-man attack. None of DA’s scorers shot higher than 78.

BOYS’ TENNIS

Gibbons 9, Chapel Hill 0

RALEIGH — Cardinal Gibbons whitewashed Chapel Hill, sweeping all nine matches Wednesday night, in a Carolina 6 3-A Conference match. Chapel Hill (11-4, 6-2 Carolina 6 3-A) needed a win to forge a tie for the conference lead with undefeated Gibbons 19-0, 8-0 C-6.

East Chapel Hill 8, Ravenscroft 1

CHAPEL HILL — Max Smith’s loss at No. 1 singles to Will Jones of Ravenscroft would be East Chapel Hill’s only loss on the day in nine matches against Ravenscroft.

East improved to 13-5 overall. The Wilcats are undefeated in PAC-6 4-A action on the year.

Cedar Ridge 9, Granville Central 0

HILLSBOROUGH — Cedar Ridge HS was led by strong matches from seniors Ryan Hudson at No. 1 singles and at No. 1 doubles with partner Sam Micol along with Cole Tullos at  No. 2 singles and doubles with partner Eliot Bogan.

Granville Central was playing shorthanded as No. 1 singles player Ryan Felts was unavailable.

SOFTBALL

Roxboro Person 11, Northern 1

DURHAM — PAC-6 4-A leader Person High (8-4, 7-0 PAC-6) scored all 11 of its runs in the final inning to overcome a 1-0 deficit and beat fourth-place Northern (5-7, 3-4 PAC-6).
