BLAZING HEATS

Jul. 19, 2013 @ 10:43 PM

Several runners turned in blazing speeds that would have been good enough for national records at the opening day of the 36th annual Russell E. Blunt East Coast Invitational Track Meet on Friday.

Would have been, but for that lilting breeze that barely cooled outdoor enthusiasts in the mid-90-degree sauna. The occasionally helpful puffs of wind were just fast enough to invalidate the records.

Action at Durham County Memorial Stadium resumes at 9 a.m. today among the 3,000 participants between the ages of 6 and 18 from 100 teams.

“I know we had a lot of records broken, but it depends on whether it will stand or not because of the wind,” said Frank Davis, coach of the Durham Striders Track Club, head track coach at Southern High School, and meet director for this three-day event.

“We had a lot of positive wind blowing behind the athletes,” Davis said.

“The time will count,” he said. “We had a couple of kids who broke national records, and a couple of those records just won’t stand. It’s automatic, it won’t stand.”

Event officials at a high-visibility track competition such as this, featuring some of the best athletes in the world, scrutinize every aspect of performance.

“The allowable (wind velocity) to set a national record is 2 meters a second, and we had winds about 3 meters a second,” Davis said.

“That’s just in the preliminaries, though, they still have to run again. If they do it again on Sunday in the finals it will stand,” Davis said. “We have automatic photo finish, and automatic wind readings during that race, and we have to submit that photo and it’s etched in the photo what the wind reading is, so you can’t falsify that stuff.”

Wind aside, the Blunt Invitational is no stranger to stunning performances.

“We’ve had a lot of people break records from this meet” in the past, Davis said. But the best times don’t usually come in the preliminaries for a reason. That’s because those are run in heats from which the top two placers advance, so it’s more about position than times.

“They don’t really go all out” as a matter of strategy, he said. “But the little kids just go all out all the time. They don’t think about strategy,” he chuckled.

“There’s a little 8-year-old girl from Charlotte that hasn’t been beat this year. Nobody’s been close to her. And I know she’ll break the national record,” Davis said.

Cheyla Scott of the Charlotte Flight team finished first in the preliminaries with a time of 29.65 in the 8 and Under 200 meter dash. For comparison, Jailen Hicks of the Greensboro Champions team finished first in the boys 8 and Under with a time of 29.59.

“You’ve got some of the best kids in the country, and a lot of them are from North Carolina. You’ve got kids who were on the (U.S.) World Team and that’s no joke. It was the best team they’ve ever had,” Davis said.

And where world-class athletes compete, college recruiters are nearby.

“I saw a lot of college coaches” on Friday, Davis said, East Carolina University and Winston-Salem State University among them.

“They primarily come to watch the older kids, and I’m sure tomorrow you’ll have a whole bunch because we’ll be running the 100s and 400s, and the older kids will start jumping,” Davis said.

Despite the blistering temperatures, Davis said there were no heat-related problems.

There were tents cooled by fans, and the athletes were able to seek refuge from the sun under that shade.

“We made sure they stayed very hydrated,” Davis said.

“They don’t bring everybody out at the same time,” and once they finish running their events the athletes return to their hotels, he said. “They don’t just sit out in the hot sun all day.”
