GIRLS’ SOCCER

Jordan lays claim to PAC-6 title share

DURHAM — Jordan assured itself of at least a share of the PAC-6 regular season title in its regular-season ending 3-0 PAC-6 win over Riverside (8-6-1, 6-5 PAC-6).

Jordan (14-2-2, 10-0-2 PAC-6) would win the title and No. 1 state 4-A playoff seed outright if East Chapel Hill (9-0-2 PAC-6) were to lose its finale at home to Riverside today (6:30 p.m.).

But in the most likely scenario — in which heavily favored East beats Riverside today — Jordan and ECH would tie for first and the PAC-6 top seed would be determined by a coin flip.

On Wednesday, Millie Blivins scored two goals and Kimmie O’Brien added the third against Riverside.

Northern 4, Hillside 0

DURHAM — Northern clinched third place in PAC-6 play, routing Hillside behind a pair of Nicole Crutchfield goals.

Alex Hammond and Carly Baker closed out the scoring for the Knights (10-5, 8-4 PAC-6) who clinched third in their regular-season PAC-6 finale. Fourth-place Riverside is 6-5-1 with a game left.

The top four conference finishers earn state playoff berths. East Chapel Hill and Jordan are effectively tied for first. Hillside, fifth in conference play, is out of the playoff picture.

BASEBALL

Voyager 10, NCSSM 1

DURHAM — For the third time in as many outings, a Voyager Academy ace — on Wednesday night righthander Loy “Bubba” Stone — threw a complete-game one hitter and N.C. Science and Math paid the price in the Carolina 12 1-A/2-A Conference finale for Voyager.

Veteran Voyager coach Pete Shankle, who spent a long tenure at Southern High before moving to administration at Northern and later returning to coaching at 1-A newcomer Voyager.

“I can’t remember anything like this,” Shankle said of the flurry of one-hitters.

Stone, who had a 19-strikeout one-hitter in his previous appearance last week, struck out 10 Wednesday at Voyager’s adopted Jack Coombs Field home at Duke University. Unicorn William Hoffman had a clean single to left in the fourth inning to break up the no-hit bid.

On Tuesday night, fellow ace Chad Sykes threw a 15-strikeout one-hitter and lost a perfect game with one out in the seventh.

Sykes and Stone, both juniors, led Voyager to a state 1-A runner-up finish last season in the school’s first year of varsity competition.

Cedar Ridge 17, RMA 7

(6 innings, mercy rule)

HILLSBOROUGH — Chris Nobblitt picked up his third win in four decisions and contributed three hits in five trips to the plate, including a pair of RBI, as Cedar Ridge won a mercy-rule shortened six-inning game.

Jacob Young went 3 for 4 with a double and and RBI and John Swanson, Asher MacDonald and Neil Higgins each had three hits for the Red Wolves. Higgins drove in three runs, Swanson two and MacDonald one.
