Falcons fall in round 2 of wrestling
Courtland Parker gave a heave-ho and came up with a much needed pin, but it wasn’t enough to help Jordan advance in the state 4-A wrestling dual-team tournament.
The Falcons fell at home to New Bern 43-27 Tuesday, just a few weeks after beating the Bears 45-19.
Jordan knocked Panther Creek out of the duals tournament with a 39-27 first-round win, setting up the rematch with New Bern, which bumped off Pinecrest 31-28.
“I did the best I can for our team so we could go further in the state duals, but it had to take everybody’s work to help get there,” said Parker, a junior 285 pounder. “I just knew I had to get the pin.”
Parker hit a textbook shrug, “and then I just kind of did a back trip, I just fell back and made sure he was on his back so I could pin him,” he said. “The pinning combination was a sort of a half, it wasn’t deep, an underhook.”
It was a far different outcome than his first match, which he dropped 1-0 to the state’s No. 8 ranked heavyweight Mike Sutton.
“I should have wrestled a little bit better in that match,” Parker said. “I just had to get back to my basics.
“We’re not going to let this loss stay on us for regionals. We’re still focused on going to the (individual) state tournament and win that state title there.”
Jordan coach Philip Davanzo knows exactly where the match got off track.
“It was 182, 195 pounds — that was the swing right there,” he said of Tyrece Jones and Kiefer Knight, respectively, who beat their New Bern opponents in the first match but lost Tuesday night. “At 195 pounds, we beat him 7-2 and then we go get pinned with 13 seconds left. At 182 pounds, the kid is wicked tough. We beat him 1-0 (and then lost in overtime Tuesday).”
Jones is ranked fourth in the state, and his foe, DeAndre Jones, was ranked ninth. Jordan’s Jones was hit with a penalty point in the first period for fleeing the mat. And then with the match seemingly locked up and Jones riding his New Bern foe tough with bar arms, DeAndre Jones slipped out and got a reversal to tie the score and send the match into overtime.
“A reversal with 10 seconds left — it’s just common knowledge that you give him one and not two (points),” Davanzo said. “We’ve got to be able to handle pressure like that.”
DeAndre Jones was awarded a point and the win 4-3 after he rode the Jordan grappler in a sudden death 30-second period after the first three overtime periods resulted in no score.
At 195, Drew Thome of New Bern rolled through Knight’s takedown attempt and clamped the Falcon with a double underhook and Turk.
Winning for Jordan were Spencer Service at 120, Robbie Tomasic at 126, Kaleel Gainey at 170 and Eric Rivas at 220.
Service went from a single leg takedown to near side cradle for a fall against Josh Hawkins. Tomasic went from a single leg lift for a takedown right into a cradle to deck Josh Forbis.
Gainey beat Dalton Hill 4-2, and Rivas took down Cody Batchelor, slapped on a cradle and pinned him.
