Area wrestlers shine at annual Jim King/Orange showcase

Heavyweights aren’t built to hit the Smith single leg takedown, which requires the agile push-off of a track sprinter and the ability to pounce like a cat.

Nobody told Riverside 285-pounder Gary Whitaker, who hammered the move twice against Courtland Parker of Jordan in his 13-6 championship final victory at the Jim King/Orange Invitational Tournament on Saturday.

“Actually it works well with heavyweights because they don’t get real sprawls,” a move in which a wrestler brings his weight crashing down on the man attacking his legs, Whitaker said.

Whitaker also hit a pair of double-legs, and a shrug to score takedowns, and in the second period jumped sides like a middleweight and slapped on a 3-point near-side cradle.

Whitaker was one of five repeat champions in the elite tournament. Cary took seven wrestlers into the finals and had four champions to win the team title.

David Peters-Logue of Orange nailed back-to-back titles for the host team, which finished second in the team standings with two titlists and a runner-up.

Peters-Logue beat Alex Zuniga of Cary 7-0 at 170 pounds. Leading 2-0 in the second period with Zuniga on top, the Orange wrestler was nearly cranked to his back when Zuniga threw in a leg scissors body ride and power half.

“He put my shoulder above my head and I was just wiggling my butt trying to get a restart,” Peters-Logue said. With a fresh start, Zuniga attempted the move again.

“He gave me that arm so I took an arm and a head and started squeezing” for a reversal and 3 near-fall points, Peters-Logue said. “It’s been a long time” since he hit a headlock, he said.

At 120, Orange grappler Joe Scott, a runner-up at 106 last year, squeaked out a 5-4 decision over 2012 120-pound runner-up Tristan Dean of Northwest Guilford.

With the score tied 3-3 going into the final period, Dean escaped and appeared to be on his way to the win with 30 seconds left.

“I just kind of dived in on a shot because I was going to lose if I didn’t try something,” Scott said. A fierce scramble ensued, with Dean coming around behind for a reversal just after the whistle ending the match.

“I didn’t know I had won the match until he raised my hand. I didn’t know if he gave him 2,” Scott said.

Armond Berry of East Chapel Hill was the first Wildcat wrestler to win at the JKO since 119-pounder Sam Nahins in 2010. Berry edged Aaron Rehberg of Millbrook 6-4 at 195 pounds on the strength of a 5-point move early in the first period.

“He tried to hit a snap down and I just caught him and put him to his back. A hook and go and I caught him. I couldn’t stick him, he was a strong kid,” Berry said.

At 182, Atavion Oliver of Northern Durham won a narrow 5-4 decision in overtime against Kaleel Gainey of Jordan.

Oliver had a takedown and Gainey a pair of escapes to tie 2-2 in regulation. There was no takedown in sudden death sending it to three periods of overtime. Oliver scored a reversal but gave up two penalty points for locking hands in the first period. There was no score in the second, and Oliver got a win by riding out Gainey in the third overtime period.

Orange 138-pounder Collin Smith dropped a 16-5 major decision to Will Clark, a repeat champion from Cary. Clark dominated from the neutral position scoring repeat takedowns.

Jordan 145-pounder Micah Marcin lost a 7-2 decision in the finals to Ke Wang of Cary, giving up three takedowns.

Michael Queen of Northwood finished second to Mark Mulligan of Cary at 160, losing 10-6. Mulligan hit a headlock to open the first period and got three back points for the early 5-0 lead.

Araad Saraami of Riverside was a runner-up at 220, falling behind repeat titlist Cary Miller of Northwest Guilford and getting decked with a half nelson at 5:29.
