S. Granville 45, E. Wake 33

WENDELL — Workhorse back Sean Bowman carried 38 times for 244 yards and a touchdown as 2-A upstart South Granville went on the road to put away 4-A East Wake Friday night.

Bowman keyed the Viking run game that netted 358 yards and five touchdowns including scoring runs of seven and five yards by Greg McCalop (nine carries, 67 yards), two yards by Earl Green and 22 yards by Craig Wilkie.

Quarterback Matt McCutcheon (9-12-0, 130 yards) threw for a four-yards score to Abraham Barron with 6:36 to play to tack on the insurance score that broke open a 38-33 game at the time.

South Granville kicker Kaleb Chamberlain kicked a 20-yard field goal at the end of the first half to give the Vikings some breathing room at 24-19 and was perfect on six point-after tries.

South improved to 5-1, winning its fifth straight after an opening night loss at tough Rocky Mount. East Wake dropped to 2-5, but the Warriors’ record is misleading because it’s come in mostly close games against some of the top 4-A powers in the area.
