Banged-up Carrboro falls short against Randleman

Oct. 04, 2013 @ 11:24 PM

Injuries to Carrboro High School standout football players Trai Sharp and Marlin Johnson have left the Jaguars with little room for error, and the special teams made too many errors Friday at home against Randleman.

The Jaguars allowed a blocked punt return for a touchdown, a punt return for a touchdown and muffed one punt return for a turnover, gifting the visiting Tigers an easy 21 points in a 41-26 non-conference loss. Johnson scored three first-half touchdowns (two receiving, one rushing) but did not return from the lockerroom in the second half.

“We spend a lot of time (on special teams),” said Carrboro coach Jason Tudryn following his team’s third straight loss. “I put the blame for those on myself. We gave them 14 points (in the first half) and that was the difference for most of the second when it was a two-score game.”

Randleman, which has just one loss-- by one point in overtime--on the season, never trailed as Bradley Berridge returned the blocked punt for a touchdown to give the Tigers an early 10-0 lead. And while Johnson made two spectacular touchdown grabs in the first half on his way to over 160 yards of offense, the Jaguars could never recover from the special teams miscues.

“We’re banged up,” Tudryn said. “We’ve got a good portion of older guys hurt but the good news is that we played a lot of younger guys tonight who really stepped up.”

Carrboro begins 2-A Mid-State Conference play next week at home against Bartlett Yancey.
