Northern holds off Hillside for victory
Northern outlasted a Hillside squad that wouldn’t stop kicking and got a 4-2 win in PAC-6 girls’ soccer action Monday night.
Alex Hammond assisted Nicole Crutchfield on two first-half goals for Northern, and Sarah Mcadon put a ball high and in the corner past Hillside goalie Jareea Bullock to give the Knights a 3-0 halftime lead.
The Northern pair connected again at the start of the second half, as Hammond put the ball where Crutchfield could finish it off to give the Knights a 4-0 margin.
But Hillside kept moving on offense, and Lanita Hughes’ 12-yard penalty kick put the Hornets on the scoreboard with 28:25 to play.
Hughes located the back of the net again to bring Hillside within two goals with 6:38 left in the game before time ran out on the rally.
“We’re a team that’s growing,” Hillside coach Jokyra Scott said. “Most of my girls, they start playing in the ninth grade.
“A lot of these around here play club soccer and have been playing since they were 3 or 4. A lot of my girls start (in) maybe middle school, at the best.”
Northern assistant coach Jared Fuller said his team’s depth helped its cause.
“We were fortunate we had a refreshed bench,” Fuller said. “We could make a lot of substitutions and keep ourselves healthy and keep ourselves energized.”
The Knights will use today’s practice to knock off some more rust, Fuller said.
“Wake up a little bit,” Fuller said. “We’re still, looks like, a little bit on spring-break mode.”
