Jordan falls to Southern Alamance in Hilltop National Division finale

Southern Alamance capitalized on a couple of Jordan errors for a 15-7 win to emerge as National Division champions in the Hilltop Invitational on Saturday.

“Back-to-back. We did it last year, too,” Southern Alamance coach Jason Smith said.

Jordan erupted for five runs in the second inning. Rahim Winston started the rally with a single that drove in a run, and Wood Myers doubled to bring in a couple more. Carter Dillard’s single brought two more runners across the plate.

“We started out halfway decent,” Jordan coach Devy Bell said. “We put the bat on the ball a little bit against what I think was a pretty good pitcher.”
Things began unraveling for Jordan in the fifth inning after a critical walk and a dropped fly ball.

“They took off from there,” Bell said. “Two costly mistakes right there, and we didn’t pitch as well as we wanted to.”

Southern Alamance in the fifth inning roughed up Jordan’s pitchers. Will Atkins took the mound with no outs and runners on second and third. He wound up loading the bases. The Patriots had him in trouble and he’d give up more damaging runs, one on a balk.

Smith said he wasn’t shaken by Jordan’s hot start.

“Seven-inning game. I knew eventually our bats would come alive,” Smith said. “We didn’t make any errors. We always try to preach that if we can win the error battle, we can win the game.”
