Mistakes aside, Jordan edges Enloe

An opportunistic Jordan High School football team bunch made plenty of mistakes but did a better job of capitalizing on Enloe’s flubs for a 21-20 win on Friday night.
This one took some cobbling by Jordan coach LaDwaun Harrison, who used two backup quarterbacks to get it done.
Starting Jordan quarterback Matt Gampe was injured, as was his backup, Jordan Simmons, so Harrison had to reach down and pull freshman Bruce Black from the junior varsity squad.
“First time under the lights on Friday night,” Harrison said about Black. “We put him in some bad situations, but he was very poised.”
Black didn’t complete a single pass and threw two interceptions, one of them going back for a touchdown.
But the freshman otherwise managed the game and took care of the football, sticking it in the belly of senior running back Rahim Winston, who rushed for 69 yards and a touchdown.
Enloe mounted a furious comeback toward the end of the game and went for a two-point conversion to win it with 1:05 remaining instead of settling for the tie.
On that conversion attempt, Enloe quarterback Dwayne Pernell tossed the football into the end zone and into the hands of Roy Garris, who was out of bounds when he caught it.
“If I had that play call back, I’d call it a thousand times over again,” Enloe coach Mike Massey said.
Garris played lights-out football all night, Massey said.
Enloe played without its top center, who had a concussion, leading to bad snaps during the game by the backup snapper.
Jordan took advantage of Enloe’s mistakes, but the Falcons, who were more aggressive than they were in Week 1, also have to play more focused football, Harrison said.
“We were up and down,” Harrison said. “ We had a really inconsistent week of practice.”
Jordan figured out a way to win, camping out in Enloe’s backfield and limiting the Eagles to 23 yards on the ground.
“They’re pretty resilient, and they’re starting to get pretty tough,” Harrison said about his team.
Harrison said Simmons started the second half at quarterback to have a more experienced guy under center.
In the first quarter, Enloe’s Tyquan Burton intercepted a pass by Black and scored to put the first points on the board.
Then two Jordan players tried to catch the ensuing kickoff, mishandled it and Enloe ended up with the ball on the Falcons’ 24.
Enloe wound up botching a punt attempt that gave Jordan a short field, resulting in a 1-yard touchdown run by Chris McKinnis.
Jordan’s Clayton Cockerham returned a second-quarter punt for a score that moved the momentum decidedly in the Falcons’ favor.
The mood changed late in the third quarter when Winston fumbled in the backfield. Enloe recovered on Jordan’s 24, setting up a touchdown strike from that distance between Pernell and Darius Payne. Those two had been trying to get together on the left side of the field and finally connected. A two-point conversion on a pass from Pernell to Garris gave the Eagles a 14-13 lead.
Jordan stormed back on a 51-yard pass play from Simmons to Picasso Keaton, setting up a 7-yard touchdown run from Winston, who also churned for the two-point conversion to put his team on top 21-14 with 11:51 left in the fourth quarter.
Jordan punted to Enloe with 4:26 left in the game. The Eagles picked up a critical first down with 2:15 on the clock. Pernell found Garris for a 34-yard pass play, setting up Jamal Frazier’s 2-yard touchdown run.
After that is when Garris caught the conversion attempt out of bounds.
Jordan recovered Enloe’s onside kick and milked the clock.
