BOYS’ CROSS COUNTRY

Area harriers fare well

WENDELL — Research Triangle Academy and Riverside individual runners placed in the top 25 Saturday of the Early Bird Invitational 5K cross country meet at East Wake High School Saturday.

Hope Mills Southview runners swept the top four spots overall and the Tigers dominated runnerup West Johnson in the team race 17-91. Garner was third at 97, followed by RTC in fourth at 108 and Riverside in sixth at 127 in the 10-team field.

Javier Alejandro of Southview took the individual title in 16:30.49.

Madison Daniel of RTA was the top area finisher in 16:49.61. Also in the top 25 from the area were Riverside’s Cole Whetstone (14th), John Haase (18th) and Jack McAdams (24th) and RTA’s Eric Young (19th), Jack Puryear (22nd) and Michal Swepson (23rd).



GIRLS’ CROSS COUNTRY

WENDELL — Pinecrest won the girls’ title at the Early Bird Invitational 5K cross country meet at East Wake High School Saturday, beating second-place Hope Mills Southview 28-62.

Riverside was the only area team in the 12-team field and finished seventh overall with 192 points, two behind Greenville Rose.

Arden Vessie of Corinth Holders won the individual title in 19:16.78. The only area runner who cracked the top 25 was Riverside junior Leland MacDonald, 11th in 21:05.30.



FIELD HOCKEY

Durham Academy 3, CCDS 2

CHARLOTTE — Lakin Barry scored twice and Amanda Pruthri once as Durham Academy opened its season with a 3-2 win at Charlotte Country Day School Friday night.

Chloe Lewis and Annie D’Amico each had an assist for the Cavaliers and goalie Isabel Gutierrez made eight saves to preserve the win.



VOLLEYBALL

Cedar Ridge splits 4

CHAPEL HILL — Cedar Ridge beat Carrboro and N.C. Science and Math and lost to East Chapel Hill and Northwest Guilford Friday and Saturday at the Chapel Hill Tigers Invitational.

Scores were Northwest Guilford 3-1, East Chapel Hill 3-2 and Cedar Ridge over Carrboro and NCSSM by 3-2 and 3-0, respectively.



Jordan wins 1 of 3

WAKE FOREST — Jordan picked up its first victory of the season, dropping New Bern 22-25, 25-9, 22-25, 26-24, 17-15 Saturday after losing two earlier matches to drop to 1-5.

The Falcons, playing in the Wake Forest Wakefield Husky Invitational, lost best of 3 matches to Triton and Leesville Road by identical 2-0 scores before besting New Bern for their first win.



Chapel Hill wins 2 of 3

CHAPEL HILL — Host Chapel Hill beat N.C. Science and Math and Riverside by identical 3-0 scores before falling for the first time this season to Wilmington Hoggard 3-0 in the Tigers’ own Chapel Hill Tigers Invitational Friday and Saturday.

In the 25-19, 25-22, 25-23 loss to Hoggard, Catherine Romaine led the way with 11 kills. She also had 12 kills and four aces in the 25-23, 25-11, 25-22 win over Riverside. Perry Ramsey had 17 kills and 17 digs in the 25-12, 25-23, 25-13 win over NCSSM.
