Outlaw, Rockets still looking for answers, win

Roxboro Person is having the toughest time finding its way back in the win column, not having won a game since nipping Southern by one point a few days before Christmas.
Apex beat the Rockets 64-45 on Saturday in the MLK Holiday Classic at Riverside High School.
UNC Greensboro coach Wes Miller and one of his assistants, Jackie Manuel, watched Person’s Tyrone Outlaw Jr. drop 23 points through the nets to lead the scoring.
Outlaw, a senior, has committed to play for UNCG.
But Person’s main engine didn’t get much of a boost from the rest of the Rockets, while Apex put three Cougars in double figures.
It’s back to PAC-6 play this week for the Rockets, and something has to change, Person coach Charles Dacus said.
“We’ve just got to do the little things,” Dacus said. “We’re not doing the little things very well right now as a team.”
Person played well after the opening tip, outscoring Apex 17-10 in the first period.
Then the Rockets sputtered, and the Cougars took it to them in the second period, outscoring Person 25-6.
“I felt that we were sharing the ball very well early on, doing some really good things, and all at once we just stopped doing it,” Dacus said. “We kind of started looking to ourselves instead of playing team basketball the way we were in the first quarter.”
Apex coach David Neal praised freshman Ian Boyd, who led the Cougars with 16 points.
The Cougars got 15 points from guard T.J. Evans, who was named the game’s most valuable player, and Neal said Apex point guard T.J. Wells (11 points) was a real difference maker out there.
“He kind of controlled the game,” Neal said. “He was spectacular.”
Outlaw was pretty spectacular, too — he just didn’t have enough Rocket fuel.
