Prep Notebook: South Granville alumn Harrison signs $55M deal

HARRISON HITS MOTHERLODE: Durham native and South Granville High School alumnus Matt Harrison, a left-handed All-Star starting pitcher with the Texas Rangers, on Thursday finalized a new $55 million, five-year contract with the club.

The deal includes a 2018 club option that could become guaranteed depending on the number of innings Harrison pitches.

Harrison was 18-11 with a 3.29 ERA in 32 starts last year and is 32-20 over 399 innings during the past two seasons. He started Game 7 of the 2011 World Series, which the Rangers lost at St. Louis.

Texas acquired Harrison along with shortstop Elvis Andrus and right-hander Neftali Feliz from Atlanta in July 2007 in a seven-player deal that sent Mark Teixeira to the Braves.

Harrison has a career record of 48-30 with a 4.08 ERA in 126 games the past five years.

GOOD NEWS, BAD NEWS: Self-described “proud papa” David Vernon, the boys' basketball coach at Carolina Friends School, reported Thursday that his daughter Zoe, a star for CFS last year, tore her anterior cruciate ligament and will miss her freshman season at Winthrop.

Vernon said Winthrop is applying to the NCAA for a medical redshirt on Zoe’s behalf and the 6-foot-1 forward hopes to return to the lineup next season with four years of eligibility remaining.

On the plus side, Vernon’s son, Nate, a 6-6 junior wing from Carolina Friends, is the No. 2 scorer (13.6 points per game), and No. 3 rebounds (4.1) and assists (1.4) man for NCAA Division III basketball power Rochester.

Rochester is 14-0 and ranked No. 2 nationally in Division III.
