Person can't get past Broughton in Holiday Invitational
A sluggish second quarter and a short bench proved to be the downfall for Person as the Rockets lost to Raleigh Broughton 73-50 in the first round of the Summit Hospitality bracket of the HighSchoolOT.com Holiday Invitational on Wednesday.
The Rockets (8-3), playing in their first Holiday Tournament since the 1994-95 season, were led by Tyrone Outlaw with 15 points, while Marquis Torain added 14 and Devin Scoggins finished with 10.
After playing a fairly even first quarter that saw Person trail 15-12, Broughton expanded the lead to double digits in the second quarter.
Person coach Charles Dacus said the Rockets just weren't able to fight back in the second half despite making an early run in the third quarter.
Broughton extended its 36-24 halftime lead to 15 points before Outlaw had consecutive three-point play attempts. He converted one to bring the Rockets to within 10 points at 41-31 with just over five minutes to go in the period.
Person managed to get that close only on one other occasion late in the third when Torain, who was 5 of 7 in the game, scored on a fast break to make it 48-38.
"We knew we were playing a team with great discipline," Dacus said. "Once we got behind they did what they needed to do to keep us down. We played well early in the second half but we couldn't get it to come all the way back."
The Rockets, who turned the ball over 20 times in the first half, did a better job of taking care of the ball in the second half and only had three more turnovers. But by then, the damage was done. Person also was outrebounded 37-23.
"We didn't box out and mentally prepare to keep them off the glass," Dacus said. "We weren't playing with a lot of energy."
Outlaw, who is committed to UNC Greensboro next year, said he was disappointed that the Rockets didn't play better.
"I would have liked for it to have been a win," Outlaw said. "I tried my best and so did the team. My shots weren't falling. We didn't play well."
Broughton (9-1) was led by Devonte Graham’s 23 points, including three 3-pointers.
The Rockets were 20 of 48 from the field, including 1 of 12 from behind the arc. Broughton, meanwhile, was just a shade better at 45.7 percent (27 of 59), but the Caps managed to hit six 3s.
Person next will play Holly Springs today at 11 a.m. in a consolation bracket game at Broughton.
