Unbeaten Chapel Hill girls win Carolina in the Pines tournament
Tournament MVP Jamella Smith and freshman forward Autumn West keyed Chapel Hill’s 54-49 win over Cornelius Hough (7-2) Saturday night as the Tigers (9-0) won the Carolina in the Pines holiday invitational basketball tournament at Pinecrest High School.
“We had a 10-point lead heading into the fourth quarter, but they cut it to five and we had to hit our free throws to win it at the end,” Chapel Hill coach Sherry Norris said.
The Tigers played the two-day event without its fourth leading scorer and top rebounder, junior center Catherine Romaine (8.9 points per game, 6.6 rebounds per game), who was attending to family holiday obligations.
Smith, who had 19 points and nine rebounds in Friday night’s 68-15 whitewash of Richmond County in the tournament opener, joined with West, a promising rookie, to pick up the slack.
West, who had suffered a knee injury in the team’s final game before the tournament, never missed a beat. She had seven points, 10 rebounds and seven steals in Friday’s win and had a similar line — 13 points, five rebounds, six steals and two assists — on Saturday.
Laura Musalem, who tied West for the rebound lead Friday with 10, didn’t score Saturday but did pick off six boards. Tamia Eatmon also had a well-rounded stat line — nine points, five rebounds, three assists, three steals.
