Anchored by a cadre of tough-as-nails seniors, Durham School of the Arts’ wrestling team shut down Cedar Ridge 51-27 and cruised to its second straight Carolina 12 1-A/2-A Conference title Wednesday.

In addition to the C-12 dual match, both Cedar Ridge and DSA also wrestled PAC-6 4-A foe Southern High School. Southern was a late addition to the event, having needed to fill an open date on its schedule.

DSA beat Southern 34-33 and Southern beat Cedar Ridge 47-30.

The Bulldogs won seven of 11 matches contested against Cedar Ridge — six by fall.

“The seniors went out undefeated in the conference. I’m really happy for all those guys because they came in freshman year still getting beat up everywhere, and to kind of build a program around them has really been a wonderful thing,” said DSA coach Todd Grantham.

“It is a totally different team than last year. We’re missing a lot of guys through the year so we feel lucky to come out with it,” Grantham said of this year’s crown and the loss of some key wrestlers to family situations.

Drake Swigart (132), Isaac Little (138) and Josh Sawyer (170) “were part of that first freshman crew who came in here from day one. They added Michael (Eubanks, 195) the next year,” Grantham said. “We’re going to miss them. They’ve been a great inspiration” to the underclassmen coming up.

“Josh and Drake in particular have done all the off-season work this past year” to improve their mat skills. Sawyer has committed to wrestle at Division I Davidson, and Swigart is weighing options from a number of schools.

The Cedar Ridge match “was pretty much what we thought it was going to be,” with the one toss-up being at 145 between DSA’s Saquan Hart and the Red Wolves’ Brendan Way, Grantham said.

“We knew that Saquan’s match with Brendan was gong to be a tough match,” Grantham said. “We know what Brendan’s done over the years so we felt good with that one.”

Way beat Hart 4-1, rolling him for a second period reversal, then getting a late third period takedown by stuffing Hart’s leg shot and spinning behind after Hart stood for an escape.

Jacob Tutor won by forfeit for Cedar Ridge at 106 to start the match. Then Bulldog Jairo Fernandez used a second period reversal into a half nelson far/arm post to pin Sean Macneela at 113.

Dedriyon Cook got a win for DSA at 120, getting a quick takedown and powering Shane Fowler straight to his back for a fall. Avery Sanders kept the ball rolling for the Bulldogs at 126, leading 5-3 before scoring a pin over Thomas Santos.

Swigart slapped a Turk and half nelson on Elijah Richardson, then reversed the half for the second period fall.

Little jumped out to a 4-1 first period lead against Mitch Shivers, got an escape after a scoreless second period, escaped in the final frame and held off Shivers’ attempt to turn him to his back after the Red Wolf got a takedown to make it 5-3.

At 152 the Red Wolves Adam Howard clamped Jahmel McLaughlin. Howard went from takedown immediately to a reverse half for a first period fall. At 160, Zach Dwinell of Cedar Ridge survived a 4-0 deficit after Jakeem Brooks hit him with a bar/chancery. Dwinell hit a headlock for a 5-point reversal, then worked into a half nelson/underhook for the fall.

Sawyer decked Patrick Blackler by lifting the Red Wolf’s leg high in air, tripping Blackler to his back and pinning him with a half nelson. At 182, Charles Bartscher grabbed Jonathan Ibanez by the chin on a sitout attempt, sucked him to his back and pinned him in the first period.

Eubanks went from single leg takedown to half nelson and reverse half to pin Daniel Ernandes in the first period. Luis Moreno (220) and Jeremy Wright (285) got forfeit wins for DSA to end the match.
