Chukwu’s 26 lead NCSSM past Bulldogs
Roxboro Community School tried to steal one from N.C. School of Science and Mathematics, but 26 points from the Unicorns’ Joseph Chukwu were too much for the Bulldogs to overcome.
“I don’t think we could stop Chukwu,” RCS coach Kirk Redman said. “He was tough tonight.”
NCSSM won 63-52, but Roxboro Community guard Christian Ingram gave the Unicorns just about all they could handle when he got warm from behind the arc.
Ingram hit four 3-pointers in the second half to keep the Bulldogs in the game. He made another 3-pointer in the first half to go toward his 20 points.
RCS guard Mickey Drumwright scored 20, as well.
“We fought back,” Redman said. “It just seems like the air got taken out of them a couple of times. I think we fought back too much, got a little tired there at the end.”
NCSSM coach Anthony Myles said the Unicorns must learn to deliver the knockout punch when they have a team on the ropes.
“We tend to relax when we get in a situation when we think we have won the game,” Myles said. “We tend to relax, and you just can’t do that against any team. We were fortunate tonight. We made a couple of defensive plays down the stretch to secure it.
“We’re still working on closing out games. We’ve lost a lot of close games this year.”
Chukwu, one of the best scorers in the Carolina 12, found Elliott Holliday and Russell Aryeetey for layups late in the game to give the Unicorns some breathing room.

The Roxboro Community School girls played from behind most of the game but had enough moxie when it mattered most to take a 50-43 win over N.C. School of Science and Mathematics.
“I only had two ball handlers and both of those fouled out,” NCSSM coach Derryl Britt said about Jenny Wei (eight points) and Samantha Michael (14 points). “We’re a very inexperienced team, and once we lose those two, we’re in a struggle and we know it. So going down the stretch, we had a few inexperienced players on the floor, and that bit us.”
Wei fouled out with 3:21 to play in the fourth period and NCSSM leading 39-36.
RCS guard Danielle Holt took over after Wei went to the bench, coming up with three late buckets — two of them off steals — to finish off the Unicorns.
NCSSM played most of the contest without Angel Chukwu, the team’s best on-ball defender. She had to be helped off the floor after a first-half leg injury and didn’t return.
“With her going down, that really hurt us,” Britt said.
