Knights pull out victory over Falcons
Crosstown rivals Jordan and Northern battled to the wire in both ends of a PAC-6 doubleheader Tuesday night, homestanding Jordan escaping with a 63-61 boys’ win and Northern eking out a 54-50 win in the girls’ opener.
In the nightcap, point guard Mike Lee drove the right wing and threaded a bounce pass through Northern defenders that found 6-8 Jordan post star Jared Hendryx alone for a dunk and the win with three seconds to play.
“It was an isolation play,” Jordan coach Kim Annas said. “Tie score, we wanted to take the last shot to either win it or go to overtime. Mike had a trementous move to penetrate and Jared found the seam.”
In the opener, Jordan failed to capitalize on five straight missed free throws by Northern (10-6, 4-2 PAC-6), including two with 2:11 to play, two more with 1:05 left in a two-point game. Jasmine Washington converted a steal for a bucket and McKenzie Utley hit all four of her free throw tries in the final 31.1 seconds to ice it.
Junior Zuri White had 17 points and 18 rebounds for Northern, while Bailey Coleman-Cox led Jordan (10-8, 4-3) with 22 points and Salita Greene added 14 points and a team-high 13 rebounds. Freshman forward Rhianna Council had 10 points and 10 rebounds for Northern.
The boys’ game was a battle all night. Northern (8-7, 2-4) led 12-5 early and by 23-18 midway through the second quarter. Conference leader Jordan (14-4, 7-0) tied it at 31 on a layup by Arthur Reese just before at halftime. Northern knotted it 47-47 on a floater by Northern’s Jaquan Harris at the end of the third quarter.
Neither team led more more than three points until Mike Lee’s layup and a pair of Josh Thompson free throws made it 57-53 Jordan with just under four minutes left in the game.
Northern answered with a pair of Kentrell Barkley (17 points, 13 rebounds) buckets to tie it at 57 with 1:23 left.
“We were up four, and we never could put them away,” Annas said.
Ricky Council, who hit 12 of 13 from the line, made all eight tries in the fourth quarter, including a pair with 34.5 left to tie the game for the final time at 61 and set up the Lee-to-Hendryx heroics.
“They’re a very good team, and we played well,” Northern coach Ronnie Russell said. “We just didn’t finish.”
Hendryx and fellow Jordan post player K.J. Alston both got into early foul trouble in the first quarter and sat most of the half, giving Council (22 points) and Northern an opening, but the Knights were unable to pull away.
When Hendryx (11 points, four rebounds) came back in the second half, Northern did a solid job fronting him and providing backside help from its scrappy zone.
“In the end, we didn’t defend as well as we were capable,” Russell said.
“(Northern) came ready to play and had a great game plan,” Annas said. “Ricky (Council) is a tough player, and it seemed like he couldn’t miss at the line — 12-for-13? That’s tremendous for a high school player.”
