Chapel Hill wins in double OT

Two of Chapel Hill’s losses during an uncharacteristic 1-3 start came by a combined four points. On Friday at J.F. Webb, the Tigers managed to come out on top of a tight game.

Darius Allen scored on a 9-yard touchdown run to start the second overtime of the 3-A Big Eight Conference opener for both teams and Conner Korfos came down with an interception in the end zone on the ensuing possession to preserve a 38-31 victory.

“It’s all about taking each game and getting better,” said Chapel Hill coach Issac Marsh. “We could have folded going into OT or there at the end of the second half and didn’t.”

The Tigers had the ball in Warrior territory and a 28-21 lead with around five minutes left in the fourth quarter. But Jonathan Harris was able to sack Grant Deselm and rip the ball away for a big turnover. Webb kept pounding away with running back Tobiah Lewis, who eventually capped the 57-yard drive on a 4-yard run. The PAT from William Gillespie was good to tie the score with 59.4 seconds left.

“We want to play it -- not necessarily conservatively -- but we want to keep making good decisions and stay in the game,” said first-year Webb coach Tony Midgette.

After both teams settled for field goals in the first overtime session, Chapel Hill’s Darius Allen ran around the right side for a 9-yard touchdown on the second play of the second overtime. Korfos made a nice catch in the end zone on Webb’s second play from scrimmage.

Allen ran for 116 yards and three touchdowns on 25 carries while Lewis had 169, including a bruising 61-yard run, on 31 carries.

Chapel Hill never trailed in the game, and scored touchdowns on its first two possessions of each half, but let leads evaporate late in each half.

“Our first two drives were flawless, and defensively we did some outstanding things,” Marsh said. “For them to come back and take momentum from us is something we have to work on.”

Chapel Hill quarterback Grant Deselm passed for 155 yards and two touchdowns while Beau Smith had 145 passing yards and two touchdowns for Webb.

“Our whole thing is to fight to the end,” said Midgette. “Tonight we had a decent showing with this being our first year in a whole new system. It hurts to lose like this after playing such a tough game.”
