Loss pushes South Granville to the brink

South Granville saw a 3-0 lead evaporate in back-to-back four-run bursts as West Stanly won Friday’s opening game of the best-of-three state 2-A softball championship series 8-5.

South Granville coach Jackie Day was upbeat and focused on today’s 11 a.m. Game 2 moments after Friday’s loss at the Walnut Creek Softball Complex here.

“There’s no quit in those girls,” Day said, looking at his huddled team. “They’re scrappers who know how to win.”

Game 3, if needed, will also be played at Walnut Creek. That game would begin at 2 p.m. today.

The way Game 1 started, it was difficult to believe the teams would wind up combining for 13 runs.

West Stanly’s only two base runners were erased on double plays started by Viking leftfielder Hunter Mundy after catching fly balls in the second and third innings.

South Granville broke the scoreless tie with three runs on four hits and a pair of errors in the bottom of the third.

Megan Bowes led off the inning with a single and scored on a double by Erin Boone. Kasey Newcomb reached second on a two-base error by shortstop Brennan Broadaway. Taylor Boyd drove in Boone with a ground out and Jenna Davis singled in Newcomb. Mundy followed with another two-out single to put runners on first and second and it looked like the Vikings would make it 4-0 when third baseman Allison Swaringen’s throw on Savannah Tilley’s grounder was dropped at first. But first baseman Macey Webb alertly saw Davis headed home from third and threw her out at the plate.

“That was a little base running error there, but you can’t score runs if you don’t run,” Day said.

West Stanly’s Colts came right back, scratching out four runs on five hits and an error in the fourth for 4-3 lead. Two of the hits were infield hits and the inning also included a bizarre play when a runner leading off second was erased after being hit by a ground ball.

Swaringen was hurt and left the game after tripping while reaching first base on an error by Davis.

Trailing 4-3, South’s Alease Daniels walked and was doubled to third with one out in the fourth by Megan Bowes, but the scoring threat was erased when Boone’s groundout to second turned into a double play as Webb caught Daniels trying to sneak home for an inning-ending double play.

The Colts then erupted for four runs on four hits in the top of the fifth. The rally knoced out Vikings starter Newcomb with runners on second and third and one run in. Davis entered in relief and was raked for a pair of two RBI hits before catcher Karlee Michalina’s throw caught Savannah Blalock attempting to steal second for the third out.

Day said the two-inning, eight-run burst had more to do with West Stanly’s bats than South Granville’s arms.

“Our pitching was hitting our spots, but they hit the ball well,” Day said of West Stanly. "… You’ve gotta respect that team. They’re good.”

Trailing 8-3, South Granville rallied in the bottom of the sixth, scoring a pair to draw within striking distance at 8-5. Mundy doubled and Savannah Tilley singled. Michalina’s RBI single and Daniels’ RBI groundout capped the scoring.

South Granville never seriously threatened again.
