Carrboro advances to 2-A quarterfinals
KILL DEVIL HILLS — Caroline Houser scored twice and Breighton Magee, Emma Houser and Kenza Araba once each Wednesday night as visiting Carrboro downed First Flight 5-1 to advance to the state 2-A quarterfinals.
Carrboro (22-2-2) will play at Roanoke Rapids (16-3-1) at 6 p.m. Saturday looking to advance to next week’s East Region championship match.
Carrboro took charge on Emma Houser’s goal with one second to play in the first half and the Jaguars playing with a 1-0 lead. Caroline Houser added a goal two minutes into the second half to make it 3-0.
“It was a very good effort,” Carrboro coach Mark Kadlecik said on his way back from the Outer Banks. “It’s not easy to get on a bus for four hours and get a result but we did it. ... We pressed them very well and made it difficult for them to play.”

Northwood, Chapel Hill fall on road
ROANOKE RAPIDS AND GREENSBORO — Northwood’s Cinderella season came to an end on the road as Roanoke Rapids took a 2-0 third round playoff victory and advanced to the state 2-A quarterfinals
Northwood the No. 2 seed from the Carolina 12 1-A/2-A Conference completes a 12-8-1 season in which it finished second to C-12 champion Carrboro.
In Greensboro, Chapel Hill (19-5) fell to 18-1-3 Northern Guilford 2-1 and was elminated in the third round of the state 3-A championships.
Chapel Hill falls to Gibbons in state 3-A semifinals
RALEIGH — Undefeated Cardinal Gibbons (25-0) shut out visiting Carolina 6 3-A Conference rival Chapel Hill (16-6) 6-0 Wednesday to win the NCHSAA 3-A East Region championship.
Gibbons advances to the state championship match Saturday in Burlington.
The Crusaders (25-0) swept the six singles matches led by state 3-A individual singles champion Robert Kelly. Kelly beat Bryan Zhang 6-2, 6-4 at No. 1 singles. Zhang and No. 4 singles teammate Lucas Prata had advanced to the state quarterfinals in doubles last week.
Doubles were not played because the match had already been decided.
