ECH’s Griffin leads state 4-A golf tournament
East Chapel Hill’s Ben Griffin fired a 4-under 68 on Monday to grab a three-stroke lead in the 77th N.C. High School Athletic Association state 4-A boys’ golf championships at Pinehurst No. 8.
The championship is being contested on a par-72 layout set at 6,698 yards for the NCHSAA event.
Griffin, who tied for 10th in a year ago after winning the title as a freshman in 2011, leads Northwest Guilford’s Drew Johnson and has a four-shot lead over a trio of golfers — Seth Gandy of Cornelius Hough, Luke Thalman of Charlotte Myers Park and Josh Martin of Southern Pines Pinecrest.
Reigning champion Stephen Saleeby of Raleigh Broughton, a sophomore this year, is in a group tied for 13th, six shots back.
Representing Riverside in the individual tournament, Alex Brese shot a 77, followed by Newt Barringer and Carson Hunt a 78 each.
Pinecrest, with four players shooting 73 or better, tallied a 291 to hold a six-shot lead in the team standings over Charlotte Myers Park at 297. Hough is third at 299 and reigning team champ Broughton fourth at 303. The best four of six individual scores count toward the team total.
Before 1986, all NCHSAA schools competed for a single title in an open tournament. Play went to three classifications in 1986 and then to four classes beginning with the 1998 tournaments.
In the 2-A competition at Long Leaf Golf and Country Club in Southern Pines, Carrboro fired a 326 and stands in seventh place behind leader Newton-Conover at 299.
Carrboro’s Kaleb Lester shot a 73 and is in fifth place overall, while teammate Adam Alfieri posted a 75 to share eighth place.
Voyager Academy’s McKenzie Barringer stands third in the 1-A competition at Chapel Hill Country Club with an opening round 75 while competing individually.
