Durham Academy crushes girls’ field, dominates boys, too

DURHAM — Durham Academy won 12 individual events — producing 13 individual winners when sisters Amanda and Ashley Jowell tied for the 1600-meter title Thursday.

The final scoring included Durham Academy 122, Fayetteville Academy 48, Cresset Christian Academy 23 and Fayetteville Christian Academy 6.

DA athletes owned the field events with Cha’Mia Rothwell, who’d already won the 100, taking the high jump as well. Peyton Dilweg won the long jump and triple jump and Betsy Wiener the discus and shot put.

Abbie Breitfeld won the 800, Katie Concannon the 3200 and DA won the 4x100, 4x200 and 4x400 relay events.

In the accompanying boys’ meet, DA also won handily. The Cavaliers’ 106 points topped Fayetteville Christian’s 75, Cresset Christian’s 19 and Fayetteville Academy’s 17.

Charlie Dektar, Stephen Watson and Lowell Oakley swept the 100, 200 and 400 sprints, respectively, while Jimmy Mosca and Tommy Monson won at 800 and 1600 meters. Jackson Dellinger won the 300 hurdles, and Watson the long jump and triple jump to give him three wins on the day.

DA also won the 4x200 and 4x400 relays, Watson, Dektar, Mosca and Monson picking up additional wins in the 4x400.
