Jordan, Chapel Hill and Carrboro won the Wells Fargo Conference Cup in their respective leagues, the N.C. High School Athletic Association announced Monday.
The awards recognize the high schools that achieve the best overall interscholastic athletic performance within each of the state’s four competitive classifications. In most conferences, points are awarded based on participation and standings in conference play. Each conference determines its own method of awarding points.
Carrboro claimed the Conference Cup in the Carolina 12 1A/2A after a solid spring season in which the school won with league titles in boys’ tennis, girls’ soccer and girls’ outdoor track and field. With a conference baseball title, Northwood was able to hold off Cedar Ridge for second place despite the Red Wolves grabbing a top finish in boys’ outdoor track and field and second-place finishes in boys’ tennis and girls’ outdoor track and field.
Previous Carolina 3-A frontrunner Chapel Hill had to fight off Cardinal Gibbons this spring but managed to do so thanks to a sweep of the track and field as well as a championship in boys’ golf and a share of the league girls’ soccer title with second-place Gibbons. Orange finished the year in third, adding a league title in softball.
Jordan won titles in boys’ lacrosse, girls’ soccer and boys’ and girls’ track and field this spring. Second place belongs to East Chapel Hill, which finished first in boys’ tennis and shared the league girls’ soccer title with Jordan. Riverside finished third with top performances in boys’ golf and baseball.
