Granville Central pitcher Lindquist ‘perfect’

STEM — Granville Central High School pitcher Justin Lindquist pitched five perfect innings in a 17-0 win over visiting Saxapahaw River Mill Academy Friday evening, but may not be credited with a perfect game.

The game was shortened from the scheduled seven innings to five under the state’s mercy-rule which calls for the end of the game when one team has a lead of 10 or more runs.

Because the game was not played to the full seven innings, it is unclear whether Lindquist will be credited with a perfect game in the N.C. High School Athletic Association record book.

Lindquist struck out 11 of the 15 batters he face and no one reached base against him.

Hillside snaps 3-year softball losing streak

DURHAM — Hillside High School came back from a 14-0 first inning deficit Friday to beat rival Southern in the PAC-6 softball opener for both teams. The win gave Hillside its first victory since the 2009 season.

The Hornets were winless in 2010, 2011 and 2012, first-year head coach Sylvia Latson said Friday. She was unsure of the exact number of games the team had lost consecutively, but said it was more than 36.

Remarkably, the Hornets ended the streak in the fifth inning when the game was called because of the so-called 10-run mercy rule. Hillside outscored Southern 28-2 from the second inning on.

Cierra Gibbs relieved Jasmine Hunter in the first inning to improve to 1-1 on the mound.
