Former Georgia Tech QB to host camp
While former Georgia Tech quarterback Vad Lee has folks holding their breath awaiting his transfer decision, another guy from the region who lined up under center for the Yellow Jackets is preparing to come home to host a winter football camp.
Donnie Davis, who played at Georgia Tech in the early 1990s, is scheduled to return to Cummings High School, his Burlington alma mater, to offer some pointers to youngsters on Jan. 18.

Davis, who lives in Atlanta, played quarterback for the Arizona Rattlers in the Arena Football League. He took that team to the 1997 Arena Bowl. The Rattlers won it 55-33, and Davis was the most valuable player, leading his squad past the Iowa Barnstormers, quarterbacked by Kurt Warner, who went on to a really nice career in the National Football League.
Lee, who used his deft arm to lead Hillside High School to the 4-A championship in 2010, recently announced his departure from run-oriented Georgia Tech.
Greensboro Day dumps DA
DURHAM — Greensboro Day kept Durham Academy big man Alston Thompson from getting off and won on the road 61-31 on Saturday.
The top scorer for Durham Academy was Ryan Hester with seven points. Thompson managed five points.
Greensboro Day had three players in double figures, including those 18 points from Peter Agba.
Voyager wins a close one
DURHAM — Voyager squeezed past Carolina Friends 48-45 on Saturday.
Allegra Berry (19 points) and Marisa Rauwald (14 points) had it going for Carolina Friends, but Voyager’s Sydney Dixon (17 points) and Laura Downing (10 points) had just a tad bit more help from their teammates to defend the home court.
Plucky Orange eventually pinned
HILLSBOROUGH — Orange came up short while hosting the 2014 Orange Winter Duals at Ebenezer North Gym on Saturday.
Davie County had Orange on the ropes 20-0 in Round 1 before the Panthers clawed back for a 39-29 win.
Then Orange took care of Wake Forest 52-24 in Round 2.
But Swansboro caged the Panthers 41-40 in Round 3, although Orange wrestler Collin Smith won his 100th match.
