Northwood grapplers runners-up

The wrestling team from Northwood High School  finished second out of 13 teams in the Bull Durham Holiday Classic on Saturday.

Northwood wrestler Rob Hamlet had a first-place finish and was named wrestler of the week.

Second-place finishes went to Northwood wrestlers Carson Amy, Michael Queen and Hunter Blackmon.  

Northwood’s Will Mishoe and John Dunning had third-place performances.

Finishing fifth were Northwood’s Grayson Bryant, Dylan Jarmon and Tyler Lowe.

Lady Eagles on "Eagle Talk"

DURHAM N.C. Central Lady Eagles basketball coach Vanessa Taylor will join NCCU Sports Network broadcaster Chris Hooks on “Eagle Talk” when the show airs live at 12:30 p.m. today at Café Renaissance, 1903 N.C. 55.

Hooks also will interview NCCU redshirt senior Jessica Freeman.

Nationwide honors NCCU's Muhammad

DURHAM N.C. Central junior football player Sayyid Muhammad was November’s Nationwide Insurance NCCU Student-Athlete of the Month.

The young man has blocked four kicks during his NCCU career and has a 3.32 grade-point average as a computer-information systems major.

Women's lacrosse at Duke in national top 10

DURHAM —The women’s lacrosse team at Duke is  ranked No. 6 in the Inside Lacrosse’s Face-Off Yearbook Division I preseason poll.

The Blue Devils last season were 14-6 and made it to the national quarterfinals.

Reigning national champion North Carolina headlines the poll, with  Maryland, Syracuse, Florida and Northwestern rounding out the top five.

Six of the top 10 squads in the poll are ACC teams, including No. 8 Virginia and No. 10  Notre Dame.
