PLAYING FOR IT ALL

Dec. 13, 2013 @ 10:13 PM

Every day, Southern coach Adrian Jones recalled, the mantra was, “State championship. State championship.”

It started back in January, inside the weight room at Southern. Rep after rep, set after set, getting stronger, all toward a state championship.

August rolled around, and it was practice, practice, practice.

State championship. State championship.

At the end of August, it was game after game, one by one with a sole goal in mind.

Southern has arrived.

“That was the goal,” Jones said.

The Crest Chargers, out of Shelby, would say the same thing, and they’re looking to return to Cleveland County with the 3-AA title that’s on the line today at BB&T Field in Winston-Salem (7 p.m., Time Warner Cable channel 520).

Jones is taking Southern into uncharted territory. The Spartans have never played for a state title in football.

But the Chargers have been there before — seven times prior, most recently in 2011, claiming titles in 1994, 1996, 2003 and 2004. That’s not to be overlooked, either, Crest coach Mark Barnes said.

High school games on Saturdays offer different wrinkles than playing football under Friday night lights. The players’ routines aren’t the same, such as being in school all day before games on Fridays, as opposed to having the bulk of a Saturday to be distracted before an evening game. Barnes has experience with managing that sort of thing.

The stakes are high, yet Barnes said he’s a stickler for making sure his players enjoy the moment, because such moments aren’t guaranteed year to year.

That uncertainty, of course, intensifies the business of winning title games when teams are in them.

“We worked hard all summer. We knew we had the tools, but we just had to take that one game at a time,” Jones said. “But that was our long-term goal, to be where we’re at today.”

It’s already been a milestone season for Southern, a 4-A team in 2012 that a few weeks ago won the inaugural Big Eight 3-A Conference championship.

“Definitely not satisfied,” Jones said. “I’m happy for my kids that we made it this far, but the ultimate goal is to come home with that championship.

“We made some history, but we want to make that total history of being the first football team at Southern to win a state championship.”

Southern has a prolific offense, and junior quarterback Kendall Hinton — he has scholarship offers from Duke, N.C. State and East Carolina — at times has looked like Superman, putting the Spartans on his cape for mighty rides.

But Southern’s playoff wins clearly have been team efforts, and that’s what it’ll take to top Crest, Jones said.

Jones said this is his biggest game as a head coach, although he’s been in some whoppers as a former N.C. Central University assistant coach in charge of defensive backs when Rod Broadway coached the Eagles to a pair of Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association championships.

Broadway was cool in big games, Jones said.

“I’m going to be as calm and cool as I can to make sure that we get this win,” Jones said.

Crest has to find a way to calm Southern’s explosive, dynamic offense, Barnes said. But Southern’s offense can’t light up the scoreboard if it’s not on the field, so Barnes wants the Chargers to grab the ball and play keep-away.

“We’re a run team. We’re going to try to dominate the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball,” Barnes said. “We want it to be a fight.

“We don’t want it to be a seven-on-seven contest. We ain’t trying to play basketball on grass. We want to play football, and we want to run the football and make you defend the run and shorten the game.”
