Game Day: Soccer team can send off retiring coach with a championship

One way or the other, Chapel Hill High School girls' soccer coach Ron Benson plans on hanging up his whistle sometime today. He's retiring.

Benson, 73, has been a part of Chapel Hill soccer since the 1980s.

But there's one last game to play, and Benson's Tigers today can send him off with a 3-A state championship by beating the Weddington Warriors at N.C. State’s Dail Soccer Field (2:05 p.m., Time Warner Cable 323).

The Warriors (20-2-1) hail from Matthews and are led by sophomore Maggie Wadsworth, who has scored at least 30 goals this season.

Chapel Hill (22-1) will counter with senior Alex Kimball, who will be looking to add to her season totals of 23 goals and 17 assists before heading off to play for the historically great North Carolina soccer program.

Kimball sure would like to add a state championship to her stats.

No Chapel Hill girls' soccer team has played for a state title, although the boys' soccer squads at the school have won several state championships.

There is no shortage of championship banners in other sports at Chapel Hill, and Timothy Bennett, the director of athletics for the Tigers, said there certainly is room for one more.
