Hillside gets it done in doubleheader
The Hillside boys basketball team is full of talent at the guard position.
But in a game with big implications on PAC-6 standings, Hillside leaned on big man Malik Evans as the Hornets defeated Roxboro Person 71-63 at home in “The Hornets Nest” on Monday.
Evans scored 19 points, many off offensive rebounds.
“When we can get him (Evans) going on offense, the rest of his game comes together,” Hillside coach Crasten Davis said. “He rebounds better and plays better defense.
“When we’re able to get our inside game going, we’re able to play inside-outside, or outside-inside. It changes how we play, and we look a lot better.”
The victory moves Hillside into third place in the PAC-6.
Notwithstanding the offensive numbers, Evans’ greatest contributions may have come on the defensive end of the floor. After scoring a basket in the first quarter, Evans blocked two shots on Person’s subsequent possession.
Then Evans scored on the next possession after grabbing an offensive rebound to give the Hornets a 10-7 lead and spark a 12-2 run.
The Rockets captured the momentum coming out of the opening period when Mike Terry was fouled as he heaved a last-second shot from beyond half-court. He sank two three free throws to narrow the Hornets’ lead to seven points.
Evans and Justice Kithcart scored six points apiece for the Hornets in the second quarter to give their team a 37-24 lead at halftime.
The Rockets scored the first three points of the third quarter. But they were quickly neutralized as Kithcart, who on a few occasions during the game, skillfully created contact as he went up for layups to force a referee’s whistle and converted and-1 free throws early in the third quarter.
With a minute and a half left in the third quarter, Marquis Torain made layups on consecutive possessions to cut the Rockets’ deficit to eight points.
Person did not go away. Torain hit corner 3-pointers to cut the Hillside lead to four points with a minute remaining. Jeff Hamlette, who had not scored for the Rockets in the first three quarters, led all fourth-quarter scorers with 10 points as Person outscored the Hornets 23-20 in the final period.
But Hillside did enough to win, going 12 of 18 from the free-throw line in the fourth quarter.
“We’ve been building on every game,” Davis said. “But the PAC-6 is so tough.”
When asked whether this victory will give his team momentum heading into the second half of conference games, Davis said, “We won’t have momentum until we win back-to-back games (in conference).
Hillside hosts Riverside tonight.
In the girls’ game, the Hornets started off a sweep of the Rockets with an authoritative 102-24 victory. The Hornets were led by Justine Lyons, Zuri White, Mya Webb and Tykyiah Williams who scored 17, 16, 14 and 14 points, respectively.
The game was close after the first quarter, the Hornets taking only a five-point lead. However, led by White’s eight points, Hillside pulled away in the second quarter, outscoring Person 25-1 to take a 48-19 lead into the half.
