Sharp, Jaguars run by Wildcats

The arm of East Chapel Hill quarterback Connor Stough was no match for the legs of Carrboro running back Trai Sharp on Friday night, as the Jaguars ran to a 34-21 victory.
Sharp scored four touchdowns and rushed for 260 yards on 26 carries as Carrboro (2-0) beat East Chapel Hill for the sixth straight year.
Stough threw for 258 yards on 14-of-35 passing with a pair of touchdowns and one interception. He also ran for a 25 yard touchdown.
Sharp scored on runs of 1, 2, 9 yards in the first half, but he gained most of his yards in the second half when he carried for 168 of his total.
It wasn’t his best game, but it was close. Last season as a sophomore, Sharp went for six touchdowns and 365 yards.
“I love coming out of halftime to see if the other team is checking out,” Sharp said. “Even though I’m the workhorse running back, I believe there are other components of the offense that are important to the team.”
The Jaguars built a comfortable 27-7 halftime lead and added to it in the third quarter with a 74-yard scoring pass from Jonah Mendys to Marlin Johnson, who finished with five catches for 130 yards. Mendys was 9-of-21 for 180 yards.
Carrboro coach Jasson Tudryn said calling the offense was easy with a back like Sharp.
“He makes me look really smart,” Tudryn said. “Give him the football and he makes like seven guys miss. You’ve got to give it to your most competitive players, and I trust him completely.”
After Sharp scored his final touchdown on a 20-yard option pitch from Mendys to give the Jaguars a 34-7 lead, East Chapel Hill’s offense finally started clicking in the fourth quarter.
Stough threw a pair of touchdown passes to Jack Hankins of 42 and 8 yards after the game was out of reach.
“Towards the second half, maybe in the fourth quarter, the offense began to gel,” first-year East Chapel Hill coach Jon Sherman said. “But at the same time, they were already up on us. We did see some things we could do, and I think we’ll be a better team.”
