The young guns of East Chapel Hill set the tone early in a 3-0 win over Wake Forest Heritage Friday night that pushed the host Wildcats into the third round of the state 4A soccer championships.

Sophomore Brynn Donnelly and freshman Eva Killenberg drilled first half goals, and Wildcats freshman goalkeeper Kayla Kern had a shutout in the net. Junior Emma Daum added a late second-half goal.

“Young girls are doing it good,” said East Chapel Hill coach Austin Collins.

The Wildcats will host the third-round game either Tuesday or Wednesday against PAC-6 4-A rival Northern, a 2-0 winner Friday night over Wilmington Ashley.

“Eva is really good, she plays well beyond her years. She’s a smart player very physical for being a freshman, which definitely helped out today,” Collins said.

“Brynne scored our first goal in the first playoff game Wednesday, and scored our first goal again tonight, so I’m definitely proud of those young girls,” Collins said.

“If we keep playing well together we’ll go far in the playoffs,” Donnelly said.

She pounded a second-chance shot into the net at 28:32 in the first half. It was her fifth goal and 15th point of the season.

Wildcats junior Claudia Sollee booted a corner kick liner to senior Dylan Bedell, whose header bounced off a cluster of players to Donnelly.

“I was right in front of the 6-yard line, and I just hit it in to the top corner,” Donnelly said.

Killenberg, the Wildcats second-highest scorer, got her 14th goal and 32nd point of the season from the edge of the 18-yard line with just under three minutes left in the first half.

“Emma Daum passed me the ball to the left side from the middle, and I cut it back inside and shot with my right foot,” Killenberg said.

Daum, the team’s leading scorer, got her 16th goal and 37th point with just over a minute remaining in the game.
