Carrboro duo wins state 2-A tennis title

CARY— The Carrboro doubles team of Max Fritsch and Jake Zinn completed a perfect run through the state 2-A individual boys’ tennis championships Friday, downing North Lenoir’s Evan Kramer and Will Hardy 6-2, 6-0 for the state title at Cary Tennis Park.

Fritsch and Zinner won their morning semifinal over Clint Comadoll and Spencer Storey of Salisbury, also 6-2, 6-0.

Their win offset the disappointment of teammate Brian Freiburghouse’s elimination in the state semifinals Friday morning. He was beaten by eventual state 2-A champ Michael Ogden of Salisbury in an extremely tight match 6-4, 7-5.

Making Freiburghouse’s performance even more notable was the ease of Ogden’s 6-1, 6-0 championship win over reigning state 1-A champion Jacob Fuqua of Hendersonville.

Fuqua couldn’t defend his 1-A title since Henderson was reclassified to the 2-A ranks this season.

ZHANG FALLS IN 3-A SEMIS — Chapel Hill star Bryan Zhang was eliminated in the state 3-A individual boys’ tennis championship semifinals at the Burlington Tennis Center by Swansboro’s Anthony Brennan 7-6 (10-2), 6-1.
