Chapel Hill tops West Craven in battle of unbeatens

Dec. 28, 2013 @ 12:15 AM

Chapel Hill overwhelmed West Craven 76-52 in the girls’ semifinals of the HighSchoolOT.com Holiday Invitational at Cary Academy on Friday.

The Tigers will play West Forsyth today at 4 p.m. at Broughton High School in the championship game.

Chapel Hill (10-0) put together another tremendous start by scoring the first nine points of the game. The Tigers eventually built a 32-5 lead early in the second quarter.

It was more than West Craven coach Dave Fernandez said he expected as Chapel Hill handed his team its first loss this season to fall to 10-1.

“They smacked us between the eyes to start the game,” Fernandez said. “We thought we were ready. We had motivation to play Chapel Hill again but we didn’t respond well early on.”

Chapel Hill also beat West Craven in the 3-A East regional championship last season.

Except for a slight lull in the third quarter when West Craven cut Chapel Hill’s lead down to 10 points on a pair of occasions, there was little doubt the Tigers would win.

Chapel Hill coach Sherry Norris said she was pleased with the way her team started the game.

“We’re excited about winning,” Norris said. “We played an extremely great first quarter and jumped out and had a good start. Our defense, which I think is Chapel Hill’s trademark, created some offensive scoring opportunities.”

Raziyah Farrington scored 21 points to lead Chapel Hill, while Jamella Smith added 16 and became the fourth player in school history to score at least 1,000 career points. Center Catherine Romaine finished with 10 points and 10 rebounds, and point guard Tonia Eatmon added 11 points.

Smith said she was excited about reaching the scoring milestone but there are other goals to reach this season.

“I am happy but I am excited to see what the rest of the season will bring,” Smith said.

North Carolina recruit Jamie Cherry led West Craven with 32 points.

In consolation games, Hillside lost to Cary 61-58 and Riverside fell to Dudley 27-26. Hillside and Riverside will play today in the seven-place game at 10 a.m. at Cary Academy.
