Cedar Ridge hangs on for win

HILLSBOROUGH — Cedar Ridge wide receiver Marquez Hunter gathered in a pair of fourth-quarter touchdown passes, stubbornly dragging a defender with him across the goal line for the winning score, then stopped a late drive as the Red Wolves dumped visiting Northern Vance 39-34 Monday night.
The game was a makeup date for Friday’s washout due to heavy rain.
Julius Walton had 117 yards rushing and a pair of touchdowns — an 11-yard rush and a 56-yard, buzzer-beating pass reception to give the Red Wolves a 26-21 halftime lead.
Cedar Ridge quarterback Peyton Pappas was 11 of 16, including five scoring strikes, with 217 yards on the night.
“It was long, really long. We had to fight,” Walton said of the close, back-and-forth game. And he had a costly mistake early in the game that ended a Cedar Ridge drive.
“When I fumbled the ball I got down on myself, and I had to pick myself back up,” he said.
“To tell you the truth it was just a matter of mind. I was trying to score for my team,” Walton said. “The line was blocking really good, and me cutting back” against the grain to pick up extra yards.
Cedar Ridge coach Chris Casey was pleased with the win, the Red Wolves second of the season.
“We talked about we’ve got to put teams away. And we talked about we’ve won one game and they haven’t won any games” and they were coming to Hillsborough to win, Casey said. “All they did in the first half was just line up and try to smash us.”
But then things turned around.
“Tonight we found ways to win. I think we are getting better. We’re learning things. We’re still making it too close,” he said.
“Julius did a great job” running off the line, and blowing some guys off the ball, Casey said.
“But when we’re able to spread it out to (wide receivers) Chris McKoy and Marquez that opens the lane up for Julius, and when Julius can run the ball like he did tonight then that opens up passing for Marquez and Chris. Everything that we run is built on something else,” Casey said.
