SUSPENDED: NCSSM, Voyager lead state tennis semis

N.C. Science & Math and Voyager Academy were well on their way to berths in Saturday’s 2-A and 1-A NCHSAA girls’ dual-team championships when rain forced the suspension of their semifinal matches Wednesday.

Northern Carolina 2-A Conference champion NCSSM (11-0) led 2-0 in its match against 15-2 Carrboro, trailed at No. 1 singles, led in two matches and was tied in a fifth when play was called at Rock Quarry Park at 4:55 p.m.

A team must win five of nine total matches to win. Six matches are contested in singles and three — if needed — in doubles.

Play is scheduled to resume Thursday, Oct. 30 at 5 p.m. at Rock Quarry Park, completing a rematch of a state 2-A semifinal pairing won by NCSSM a year ago. The winner — the 2-A East Regional champion — advances to the state title match against the Western Regional champion at 9:30 a.m. at the Burlington Tennis Center in Burlington.

At Treyburn Country Club, No. 1 seed and North Central Athletic Conference champion Voyager Academy suspended its home match against wild-card playoff entry Franklin Academy at 5:45 p.m.

Voyager, which split a pair of conference meetings with the Wake Forest visitors during the regular season, led in four matches and trailed in two when play was called.

The match will be resumed at 2:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 30 at Treyburn.

Going Berserk! Vikings best Jags for state 2-A title berth

Weathering Carrboro’s quick start was the key for South Granville to come back and beat the Jaguars 3-1 (19-25, 25-23, 25-18, 25-16) Tuesday night in the state 2-A volleyball semifinals.

No. 4 East seed South Granville (28-3) earned its second berth in three years in the 2-A state championship which will be played at 5 p.m. Saturday at N.C. State’s Reynolds Coliseum, against the 2-A Western champion, No. 11 seed Hendersonville, which beat No. 8 West seed Bunker Hill 3-0 Tuesday night.

South Granville coach Christy Fitzgerald said her team played with a lot of poise against East No. 2 seed Carrboro after losing the opening set.

“We knew Carrboro was going to be a tough team,” Fitzgerald said. “We knew they were balanced a lot like us and they had a lot of weapons like us. After the first set we settled in and remembered who we were and it started to click and it started to flow.”
