Orange is ranked No. 8 in the state among 3-A programs and Northwood No. 25 by MaxPreps.com, the online partner of the N.C. High School Athletic Association. ...The game is one of 13 games involving area teams on tap tonight. Only three others — Greensboro Dudley at Northern, Chapel Hill at Oxford Webb and Bartlett-Yancey at Roxboro Person — will be played in the area, the rest are on the road.

“Intense” is the word Northern High coach R.J. Wilson uses to describe the Knights’ football rivalry with crosstown rival Southern which will be renewed at 7 Friday night at Durham County Memorial Stadium. Southern alum and coach, Adrian Jones, says the Northern rivalry is more special to him than his players — “Hillside came in and took over the rivalry for the players,” Jones said. “But the game means a lot to me and I talk to my players about it a lot.” The rivalry has involved emotional investment with little return for the Knights of late.
