Wachovia Standings; Area teams on top in 5 of 6 leagues
Area teams lead or share leads in five of six conferences that include area high school interscholastic athletic programs after the winter season in Wells Fargo Conference Cup competition.
The Wells Fargo Cup award, sponsored by Wells Fargo and the NCHSAA, recognizes the high schools that achieve the best overall interscholastic athletic performance within each of the state’s four competitive classifications.
The Wells Fargo Conference Cup is a companion to the Wells Fargo Cup and recognizes conference leaders.
In most conferences, points are awarded based on participation and standings in conference play. Final results will be determined at the conclusion of the spring sports season.
Here’s a conference-by-conference breakdown.
Jordan moved into a tie for the top spot with East Chapel Hill thanks to second-place finishes in boys’ and girls’ basketball. East swept the conference swimming championships.
Current cup standings: East Chapel Hill 53, Jordan 53, Riverside 50, Northern Durham 36, Hillside 24, Person 23.
Big Eight 3-A
Chapel Hill captured the conference lead with league titles in boys’ and girls’ basketball, boys’ and girls’ swimming, and a second-place finish in wrestling. Previous No. 1 Cardinal Gibbons is second after runner-up performances in girls’ basketball, boys’ swimming, and girls’ swimming. .
Current cup standings: Chapel Hill 69, Cardinal Gibbons 63, Cedar Ridge 48.5, Orange 47.5, Northwood 40, Southern 26, Oxford Webb 17.5, Northern Vance 16.5.
Carrboro increased its lead with a sweep of the conference swimming championships and third-place finishes in boys’ and girls’ basketball. Reidsville moved into a tie for second with Jordan-Matthews after sweeping league titles in basketball and finishing second in boys’ and girls’ swimming.

Northern Carolina 2-A
N.C. School of Science & Math tied Franklinton for the top spot after finishing first in swimming.
Current cup standings: NCSSM 49, Franklinton 49, Bunn 45, Durham School of the Arts 40, South Granville 36, Roanoke Rapids 35, Southern Vance 30, Warren County 18.
North Central 1-A
Raleigh Charter increased its first-place lead to four points but a league title in boys’ basketball and a second-place finish in wrestling lifted Voyager Academy into second place.
Current cup standings: Raleigh Charter 47.5, Voyager Academy 43.5, Franklin Academy 43, Roxboro Community 25.5, Kestrel Heights 23, Woods Charter 22.5, River Mill 20.5, East Wake Academy 11.5.
Tar Roanoke 1-A
League titles in boys’ and girls’ basketball kept Granville Central on top.
