VOLLEYBALL

Jordan 3, Hillside 0


DURHAM — Rose Gunn’s 18 assists set up Jordan scorers for a 25-12, 25-14, 25-21 win in their PAC-6 4-A opener at Hillside Thursday night.

Sarah Cato had nine kills and five aces for the Falcons, who also got a team-high six digs from Olivia Rodriguez as Jordan leaned heavily on its reserves late in the match.

 

Trinity/Durham 3, O’Neal 0

DURHAM — The Trinity School of Durham and Chapel Hill improved to 13-1 with a 25-9, 25-18, 25-10 win over The O’Neal School of Southern Pines.

 

Chapel Hill 3, N. Vance 0

CHAPEL HILL — Perry Ramsey had 18 kills, Annie Linker 36 assists and Jadey MacDonald 13 digs to lead the Tigers past Northern Vance 25-8, 25-22, 25-15 in a Big Eight 3-A Conference showdown.

Chapel Hill improves to 9-4, 4-1 in league play.

 

Cedar Ridge 3, Oxford Webb 0

OXFORD — Cedar Ridge improved to 5-0 in its inaugural Big Eight 3-A Conference season behind 13 kills and four blocks by Bailey Freeman, 32 assists by Cass Michal and 11 digs by Mary Anderson.

The Red Wolves improved to 9-3 overall.

 

Orange 3, Northwood 0

PITTSBORO — Ashley Muench had 16 kills and Tara Weller 18 assists to lead Orange past homestanding Northwood 25-14, 25-17, 25-23 in Big Eight 3-A Conference action Thursday.

Orange improved to 6-4, 3-2 Big Eight, while Northwood dropped to 1-6, 0-5.

 

Riverside 3, ECH 0

CHAPEL HILL — Zaria Thomas had a team-high 14 kills and Victoria Pearce and Casey Speer stood out with outstanding floor play as Riverside won its PAC-6 4-A opener over East Chapel Hill 25-15, 25-15, 25-17.

Speer had 25 assists, 12 digs and an ace and Pearce 17 digs, 15 assists and 3 aces for the Pirates.

The match was the first in conference play for East as well.

 

S. Vance 3, NCSSM 2

DURHAM — N.C. Science & Math came up on the short end of a five-set thriller against Northern Carolina 2-A Conference foe Southern Vance 25-12, 25-27, 25-20, 25-27, 15-11.

“What a match,” NCSSM coach Daven Mainwaring said. “(There was) no sure winner in any game until the final point was scored. ... Tough loss for us.”

Sam Zarnik assisted on 22 points including many by kill leaders Rebecca Shen (13) and Carrie Emerson (11) for the Unicorns. Floor burns also piled up as Claire Namboodri had 38 digs and Shen 23.

 

GIRLS TENNIS

DA 8, Chapel Hill 0


CHAPEL HILL — Olivia Li picked up the 50th win of her high school career 6-1, 6-0 over Gabe Chew and the Durham Academy senior also won in doubles as the Cavaliers shut out Chapel Hill on the road.

DA improved to 5-1 and Chapel Hill fell to 5-4.

Peyton Dilweg also swept her singles and double matches for DA. The No. 3 doubles match was suspended because of rain, leaving only eight team points contested.

 

E. Chapel Hill 9, Hillside 0

CHAPEL HILL — East Chapel Hill improved to 11-3 overall and 5-0 in PAC-6 4-A play with a 15-0 doubleheader sweep of visiting Hillside (0-5, 0-5) Thursday.

East won the opener 9-0 and also swept the six singles matches in the nightcap before doubles play was rained out.

 

FIELD HOCKEY

DA 2, Providence Day 0


DURHAM — Sisters Jordan and Lakin Barry each scored as Durham Academy shut out Charlotte’s Providence Day School.

Keeper Isabel Gutierrez stopped all seven shots she faced as (DA) improved to 3-1 on the year and handed PDS (9-1) its first loss in 10 outings.

 

BOYS’ SOCCER

Chapel Hill 4, Carrboro 0


CHAPEL HILL — Ben Fisher scored on a penalty kick in the 23rd minute of the opening half and Chapel Hill added three second-half tallies to subdue rival Carrboro.

Justus Heizer had two saves to notch the shutout in goals.

Nate Hebert scored off a Connor Albrecht assist in the 42nd minute, John Walden added the third goal off an Hebert feed in the 48th minute and Brandon Walker closed out the scoring with an unassisted goal in the 77th minute for 8-1-1 Chapel Hill.

Carrboro, last year’s state 2-A runner-up, dropped to 2-4-2.
