GAME OF THE YEAR

Orange and Southern meet in the area game of the year Friday, Nov. 8, the first meeting of the Big Eight 3-A Conference co-leaders as fellow 3-A members. But while Friday's regular-season finale will decide the Big Eight title, it might not be the last time the two face off this season. Two of the top 3-A programs in the state, they could very well face each other again in the playoffs. Both teams have already locked up playoff berths. In Durham, PAC-6 4-A co-leaders Northern (2-6, 2-0 PAC-6) and Hillside (5-2, 2-0 PAC-6) meet at Hillside’s Russell Blunt Stadium at 7 p.m., but Hillside is a prohibitive favorite despite Northern’s two-game win streak. The Northern-Hillside matchup is one of only two between league leaders tonight. ... In Louisburg, Tar-Roanoke 1-A Conference co-leaders Granville Central (5-3, 2-0 T-R) and Louisburg (5-3, 2-0 T-R) lace ’em up. ... At Jordan, Riverside (5-3, 2-1 PAC-6) will try to shrug off a 35-21 home loss to powerful Hillside and shouldn’t have much trouble as the Pirates visit injury-riddled Jordan (1-7, 0-2 PAC-6). Red Wolves howl after homecoming upset of Oxford Webb

Northwood shows it can win ugly

Northwood allowed a 90-yard kickoff return for a touchdown and immediately answered it with one of its own Friday night against Oxford Webb. The return gave the Chargers a lead they would not relinquish in a 33-21 3-A Big Eight Conference win on homecoming.

PAC-6 opens play tonight; Big Eight leaders clash

The long non-conference season for PAC-6 4-A football teams comes to an end tonight — and it couldn’t have come at a more auspicious time for a mostly-struggling half dozen, all coming off bye weeks. In other games tonight, Big Eight 3-A Conference powers Southern and Cardinal Gibbons meet in Raleigh with a share of first place on the line. Other Big Eight matchups include Northern Vance at Chapel Hill, Cedar Ridge at co-leader Orange and Oxford Webb at Northwood.
