South Granville outscores Franklinton
Sean Bowman carried South Granville to a 67-57 win over Franklinton with a career-high 396 rushing yards on Friday night in the Northern Carolina 2-A opener for both teams.
Bowman, a junior, scored three touchdowns on runs of 5, 23 and 80 yards, while quarterback Matt McCutcheon threw for three touchdowns and ran for another to lead South Granville's offense.
"I've got to give credit to the offensive line because I couldn't go anywhere without them," Bowman said. "You've got to give it all you've got. Effort is going to get you there."
Meeting for the first time since 2008, the Vikings (6-1, 1-0) earned their fifth straight win over Franklinton (5-2, 0-1) and it was a wild one.
"Our offense played good, our special teams did not and the defense was okay," South Granville coach Mike Hobgood said. "Franklinton is good. This was bittersweet because you don't normally give up 57 points and win. We're happy to win but we have some issues we need to fix."
The Red Rams, who trailed by as many 27 points in the second half, fought back to within a touchdown twice thanks to a string of special teams miscues by South Granville.
Travon Judkins scored on an 88-yard kickoff return for Franklinton and then the Red Rams scored twice more in a row after recovering onside kicks. Judkins finished the first one off with a seven-yard touchdown pass from Daquan Neal to make it 48-35. And then on the first play after recovering the second onside kick, Neal connected with Mike Waverly for a 42-yard scoring play to cut the margin to six points
The teams traded touchdowns again as McCutcheon hit C.J Hurt for a six-yard touchdown with 10:29 left in the game before Neal struck for the Red Rams on a 10-yard keeper with 6:52 left.
South Granville finally put the game out of reach on McCutcheon's eight-yard keeper with 4:09 left for an 11-point lead.
"That was a big momentum changer at the end of the game," McCutcheon said. "It put us on top and in a good position to win the game."
But the scoring still wasn't quite over.
Greg McCalop scored his second touchdown on a 10-yard run with 1:46 left and Judkins and Neal hooked up a final time from 23 yards for Franklinton's last touchdown in the final minute
South Granville had the first big play of the game as McCutcheon hit Craig Wilkie for a 58-yard touchdown pass on the first play from scrimmage. The Vikings went on to build a 35-21 lead by halftime.
