Granville Central got a milestone 16-8 win over Weldon on Friday.

It was the first time that Granville Central ever won a conference game.

“That’s just huge. We’ve been fighting,” Granville Central coach John Hammett said.

The matchup was the 1-A Tar-Roanoke Conference opener for both teams.

Weldon (2-5, 0-1 TRC) had an 8-0 lead in the first quarter before Granville Central (4-3, 1-0 TRC) got it going on offense.

In the second quarter, Granville Central’s Bryce Parrott scored on a 1-yard run and then put more points on the scoreboard with a 25-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Jay Parker.

Granville Central had some cushion to work with but Hammett’s halftime speech was about finishing the game.

“Just play,” Hammett said he told his guys.

Late in the third quarter, Granville Central cornerback Shaquille Freeman ended a Chargers drive with an interception inside his team’s 10-yard line.

Last year, Granville Central might not have won a close game like this, but the Panthers are figuring out how to put it all together, Hammett said.

“I think we’ve turned the corner to where we’re going to fight to the end,” Hammett said.
